for all you jim tracy haters....

he's out...

jim tracy fired

i know he is the micro manager but i like what he did in his stay in LA. brought back the player personal responsibility for the club. last year was magic, this year a nightmare. injuries and poor judgement by depo sabotage him.

cheers

I'll miss him just for his quotes at Dodger Blues, the only Dodger-related website that I read!

I've got mixed emotions about this. I liked Tracy as a person and thought he was one of the better managers in baseball but he really clashed with DePo's philosophy. You can't have a productive team if the front office and the manager are pulling in two different directions. Maybe this is for the best. Some other team is going to get themselvs a fine manager in Jim Tracy.

I think this was done so quick is because the Dodgers did not want to fall behind on the hiring curve. With a few good skippers out there, they wanted to get a head start. Also, Tracy will end up somewhere and he will make the Dodgers look really foolish for this (Which, lets be honest, isn't that hard to do)

I'm upset by this. Tracy was a good baseball mind, IMO. He handled clubhouse problems better than he was given credit for. He seemed to me to be the second coming of Walter Alston - quiet, knowledgable, in control.

There's no one out there right now who's as good, and God help us if Baker comes to town.

Tracy is a great guy and a good manager. I'd rather have a good guy and a great manager.

This move was pretty obvious. If DePo had planned to keep Tracy around, he would have given him the extension before it ever came to this. Despite the constant "vote of confidence" from DePo, clearly he often disagreed with Tracy's strategies. A couple of the most glaring examples: Tracy insisting on keeping Jason Phillips in the lineup after he lost his catcher spot to Navarro and refusing to play Choi and Antonio Perez. Phillips was just plain horrible and there was little reason to sit Choi and Perez without giving them a chance to sink or swim in anotherwise forgetable Dodger season.

DePodesta said that, because of the differences with Tracy, even if the Dodgers had won 95 games this year, "We'd still be having this discussion [on the conference call] sometime this month."
I'm going to have to call BS on this one. If the Dodgers had won 95 games they'd be getting set to host a playoff game tomorrow with the second best record in the NL.

Baker will not be in a Dodgers uniform in 2006 -- Legend Lock.
I'm not sure why I keep hearing Orel hershiser and Kirk Gibson's names. Maybe it's Dodger fans looking for a link to a bygone era. Expect the campaigning by Kevin Kennedy to commence at sunrise.

I liked Jim Tracy too. For all his self-interviewing, the man was an interesting character and he managed to get the job done in LA.

But for those blaming Depo, from reading the article it sounds like Tracy wanted out too and it was he who opted out of his extension (he had a 7 day window to opt out of the extension after the season ended, which started today, monday). The fact he opted out so quickly just goes to show his mind was already made up.

That's not to say i'm not holding Depo partly responsible for this, it certainly comes off as if Depo's drove him out of town. I've also been hearing Orel's name as a likely candidate to replace Tracy, i don't think it'll happen. Orel's another old-school guy who doesn't do things a la SABR.

I wouldn't be too optimistic about Orel becoming manager either. the only experience i know of he has coaching is the pitching coach job with the rangers. I'm not convinced i'm sorry.

What's so good about Jim Tracy? He didn't get along with Dan Evans either, if you believe some reporters, and he was nearly fired two years ago.

I will miss Tracy. As a Dodger fan he was the first manager I liked since Lasorda. I really can't say I blame the guy for wanting out. It seemed like Depo and he just did not see eye to eye.

And the manager marry-go-round continues...

I thought Tracy was decent as a manager until this year. I couldn't understand why he wouldn't play Choi. Even with nothing to gain, he kept putting Saenz or Phillips out there instead of Choi and he didn't seem to play Perez as much as he should. Made no sense. If you're going to play kids (mostly due to injury), why not go through with it and give Choi the playing time.

I'm surprised to see so much Tracy love from the Dodger fans. One of the great unknowns in analyzing baseball is how much difference a manager can make in his team's record. It's hard to know what impact each of their decisions has. But I can safely say that a manager who refuses to play his best players is doing more harm than good.

That's about the best endorsement he could have.

True. The only advantage is that LA paid Phillips a little over $300,000 while Ishii made a few mill.

Phillips makes Mike Piazza look like Benito Santiago in his prime with the way he attempts to throw out baserunners. And he runs slower than Mike Scioscia.

Well, at least with Scioscia you can truly say he still hasn't lost a step.
