History

Surely this question has been addressed but I can't find it, but what kind of history will OOTP7 produce? Almanac? Cato-like?

I think a lot of people are waiting on that. Markus has said he'd institute some Cato features into it, but I think he might've said the almanac will still be there, too. I'm not sure how the combination will work. That's probably going to have to wait for another blog.

There's also a grass roots movement for a new and improved (and open-sourced!) Cato for the new game, that could come along not much after the game, should Markus' stat-tracking not be to everyone's specifications. Considering many of the people who work on third party programs for this game, I don't think it'll even take that much longer after the game comes out to get it either.

I have seen the grass roots movement and with the amazing talent that we see on these boards I trust that something good will come from it, but I sure would like to see a comprehensive stat-tracker directly from the game. That's what baseball is all about. A baseball game without a really good history tracker is like a truck without wheels.

Not only league history, but player history is another area that could use an interesting tweak or enhancement. If only to be able to at-screen edit the history to make any comments/changes we saw fit. But plenty of room for innovation in that arena from the creative folks around here, I'm certain.

With the universe of leagues available, I wonder whether player histories will keep track of all teams in all leagues played or will be limited... I think it would be cool to see some minor league journeyman have 15 years in various minor leagues in his history... I just wonder how it'll keep all the variety of leagues straight.

The current OOTP Almanac doesn't do too bad of a job except for not tracking managerial records. But there is sooooo much more it could do. The nature of baseball history, tradition and stats beg for an amazing historical database.

It's also not cross-linked very well so it's very hard to navigate between seasons. It's very difficult to track players since you can only bring up a player's history up to the season you're viewing.

What would make it much better (not to mention more efficient storage-wise) is if each player had one master card which was updated each year until retirement and which each season would link to. Throw in links back to team cards from the player cards themselves, and that's halfway to Catobase capabilities right there.

Correct, treedom. Then throw in managerial records and you are well past half way to Catobase.
