Not very long retirement.
This is interesting.
He has a career ending injury in 1971 and then makes a comeback from retirement in 1972. Maybe we should have gotten a note from the Dr. http://www.sim2005.com/1974/p6.html It's a flaw in the comeback from retirement.

Because his CEI came in ST 1971, he had a little over a year to heal, so I don't see this as a problem. If he had a CEI in September of 71 and came back the next spring, I might see it as a problem.

Exactly. Whether it's a 'bug' or not, I see it as a fun little consequence of the new programming. Like Bo Jackson - his career was supposed to be over after hip replacement, but he came back for a bit.
