Signing Scouts and Coaches
First off, I think the scouts and coaches are an excellent part of OOTP. They force you to play money ball and add a question mark to every decision. That being said, I recently turned them off out of frustration. Why, during the signing period, do you only get 1 crack at signing a coach/scout? I find that I am bidding well above the asking price and still don't get them (I don't want to just throw 6 figures at them because it feels like cheating). After one round, all the quality coaches and scouts are signed and you are stuck with the scrubs. In my opinion, for this option to work, there has to be a bidding period like during free agency. Maybe it could be done at the same time as FA, just another position to fill.

I know exactly what you mean. It seems like such a random thing, not in our favor.
What I do is before the coach thing, I turn my team back into a computer manager. I run the coach signings and then turn my team back into human (or close to it) control. The computer does a better job of getting good coaches, usually. I just pretend I told my nephew, ok, your job is to go sign the scouts, go do that for me please.

I go back and forth on whether coach and scouts add that much to the game. I appreciate superior scouting reports for sure. I also know that excellent(+) coaches can make a world of difference in player development and performance. But, it often seems too easy to get the best coaches/scouts against the AI. And I'm not sure the game needs any more variablity than it inherently has without coaches/scouts. I prefer to modify the player development factors in the engine and perhaps that's enough in that regard.
Sometimes, in order to make the game more of a challenge, I will assign good(+) coaches to all AI teams and allow myself only average(-) coaches. Increases the cifficulty level. |
