Emulating the Bare-knuckle era
1. First, I think there should be some way of designating, probably at the fighter attributes level, a fighter of being from the bare-knuckle era. This fighter, if matched against a modern fighter, probably should suffer some "control" penalty?? Or maybe give the player a choice to designate a bareknuckler at the fight setup level. That way, we can sim a modern lennox lewis vs. corbett or we can say BOTH men are bareknucklers and sim a total bareknuckle fight.
2. To emulate the fight, maybe we should have the option of designating the fight beforehand as bareknuckle. Just like OOTP gives you the option of picking deadball era, modern baseball, etc., maybe if we select the bareknuckle era, we can get: A. Increased probability of injury B. Extra option of 3-minute round with rest between rounds or rounds being called when a fighter falls with 30 second rest before coming to scratch. C. Text commentary will reflect wrestling/grappling attempts. Strength, endurance, and foul rating could be used in a formula to dictate any result from such. D. Ref almost never stops the fight unless flagrant fouls persist. E. Option of the ref judging result of stopped bout (due to fouls, crowd, or even police!!) instead of 3 judges. Also, any bareknuckle fight will heavily dampen purses/gate money. These are just a few thoughts on the idea....I've been thinking about this for a while and wanted to hear anyone else with an idea or thought.

Wow...this is exactly something I've been thinking about regarding the game. I'm also a big fan of turn of the century boxing and have rated about 120 guys who were active starting in 1890.
I've always thought it would be great to set up fight options to emulate the conditions these guys fought in back then. In addition to your ideas Jaret, I'd also like to see the option to have no limit to how many rounds a fight could go...ending only when a guy could no longer continue. It'd be fun to have one of those 75 round marathons. I'm sure there are other settings that could be adjusted to more accurately reflect prize fighting back then, but I'm too tired to think of anymore at the moment. Mark When They Were Kings |
