How to keep a draft moving

hey all

I'm looking for some advice from other commishioners on how they kept their drafts moving at a good pace. The present one in the DoCBA will be completing the 7th round in roughly a week and a half, and i'm wondering if this is a godo pace, or am I right in feedback from some folks that its' progressing too slowly. I have it so folks can post their picks online at any time, four hour time limit for picks.

Any thoughs on this matter would be greatly appriciated

In my opinion, that is a pretty good pace. I usually give my GM's 12 hours to pick, and it takes forever. My drafts are on June 1st, I start at the beginning of the season and usally only get two to three rounds done. If you can get 7 in a week and a half, you are my hero.

lol thanks

originally I had it so lists were submitted every day, but found that too many CPU picks needed to be done. In hindsight, starting the league around the holiday weekend was probably not the best thing to do

I'd say that's a very good pace too.

Our league posts a prioritized list of names, or specifics like "highest rated MR available" at 4th RD or "highest rated position player" at 5th RD. etc. We ask that GM's submit via the message board and many GM's, myself included, post very late and just before the Draft thread is locked. To avoid other GM's looking over my draft list before submitting theirs.

It works well and we get our entire draft done(with the help of a couple of volunteers for double-checking) within an hour or two.

We've never had any complaints and it's fun for all the GM's to look over the draft lists after it's been locked. They can already project who they're going to get even before the next league file gets posted.

On that news quote, from London, who said that? Somehow I picture Sean Connery saying it, it is like a scene from The Untouchables.

My league did 5 rounds and then we simmed the rest. After the first five rounds, if you havn't drafted anybody good, you're not going to.

How long do your postseasons last? My league is about to "extend" to 12 days from 10 days currently. Draft, FA, the whole enchilada in that time.(currently starting our 5th season)

What's the norm out there?

It's really hard to fill out a 25 man roster with full control over just 5 picks.

Hmm, our offseason is usually about 7 days, we do 5 days at a time for 6 days and then we do the spring training the next day. I know alot of leagues and some that I am in take longer. Two of the leagues had offseasons that lasted 2 weeks or more. I tend to lose interest when it takes that long, so I like to keep things moving. During the season, I only sim 3 times a week, but during the offseason, I usually have something going on everyday.

We are on getting ready to start our 4th season.

I agree with the loss of intrest after two weeks, and I'm sure others have also experieinced this. In one league the initial draft took literally months, which i'm surprised that it didnt kill off the league myself.

drafting

The NPBL has held their annual amature draft online...as in live...I've only been able to make it to a couple over the past few seasons, but they have been fun.

As for an initial draft, can't help ya there....the NPBL just did a computer draft.

Yeah, a live draft with 24 teams, 4 rounds, takes only 3-4 hours.

how do you guys deal with it if you have members from around the world? I have found doing a live draft impossible to let everybody have a fair chance.

I allow people to email a list if they can not make the draft. It is impossible to expect everyone to be able to make a live draft. As I said we do ours on June 1st, but start it when the season starts. Do as much as we can via the messageboard. When we get to June 1 in the schedule, then I do a live draft to finish what we didnt get done.

We usually have between 7-12 owners present for the draft. So, people who can't make it send lists or ask to have the computer pick. I don't think we have anyone outside the US in the league.

That's my league. Commish is in Japan, the rest are across the U.S. but we've had some GM's in Europe as well. Like I said, our "Post Draft list on Forum" method is quick, easy and a lot of fun for everyone involved, regardless of where we all live.
