Schmidt Trade Rumors?

So three times in the past couple of days I've heard people making oblique references to the Giants trading Jason Schmidt. I can't quite wrap my head around that, but it appears to be the hot rumor right now. Does anyone know (1) why? , (2) with whom?, or (3) for what? The Giants' big problem this season has been their pitching; I don't see any way that trading Schmidt would help that problem.

Depends on what problems they are seeking to fix. They are also pretty old and, if they pack it in this year, will have to get younger quickly. This is a way.

I think he is has good value from some teams. He won't get Petit from the Mets, but he could fetch some good players (maybe Diaz).

I've read some wild speculation that the Sox may try for him, though why they want another old SP with the potential for long term injury is beyond me.

Does he have an option next year? If so, are the Giants going to pick it up?

My only guess is they know he is having issues and want to deal him after 2 great starts. I would hate it if they did as a Giants fan.

As far as $$$, I think he has an 11 mil team option with a 3 mil buyout (it may be 10/3 though)

The only Giants rumor I've heard lately regarding the Giants is Moises Alou being trade to the Cubs. I haven't heard the Jason Schmidt rumor.

I read a report somewhere on the interweb (it may have been a Ken Rosenthal column) that suggested that Schmidt is injured and Sabean and co. are concerned that he may never again be the pitcher that has thrilled Giants fans for the past couple seasons. Given his age and the club's salary commitment to him it would make sense to move him if they believe this to be true.

Then again maybe he's just too young to play regularly for SF.

With 2 good starts under his belt, trading Schmidt only makes sense if he rattles off another month of good pitching. Otherwise, the Giants would be selling low. And that is the opposite of selling high, in case you didn't know that.

But, despite their failings this season, the Giants don't seem inclined to attempt to build through youth. They want to maintain their organizational strategy, and hope it works out better with their next group of players in their decline phase.

So I don't know what they would do with whatever prospects they got for Schmidt.

Thus, even though I have heard several people make comments about trading him, I don't think there is more than a sim chance of it happening.

From what I hear, the Giants are basically chalking this season as lost due to injury (Bonds, Benitez) and while they still have hope they won't be moving anyone who would have a positive impact on next season.

If that's the case, I'd be very surprised to see Schmidtty go. I could see any and all of Durham, Grissom, Reuter, Snow and any other possible free agents (I couldn't find a list, anyone got one?)

I heard for one thing the Mets rejected a Durham of Kaz Matsui swap.

This can't be correct, as the Mets are known to make only poor personnel decisions.

This guy would look great in a Padres uniform. That won't ever happen though.

I heard the Giants want 3 prospects in return. I see him gone in the next two weeks.

I heard a rumor about sending him to the Yankees for a couple of prospects (possibly Wang).

If they trade him they are basically resigning themselves to a rebuild. The way I see it, the Giants have two options.

1) Keep Schmidt and go for an all out 2006 hoping for a healthy Bonds, Benitez, and Schmidt while probably signing or trading for another aging star to try to get Barry that ring.

2) Go Cleveland Indians style rebuild. This means trade Schmidt to the Sox/Yankees, whatever, Barry to the Angels, Alou to the Cubs, Matheny to anybody stupid enough to take him, etc. I don't think Sabean has the balls for this and I would certainly be sad to see Barry's tenure with the Giants come to an end, but I wouldn't be entirely crushed.

Do you think the Giants would trade Barry even if they decided on a wholesale rebuilding? I assume they'll do everything they can to have him retire as a Giant.

10 and 5 makes it really hard to move him also.

He's said he'd accept a deal to the Angels in the past. Guy wants a ring (not that I think that gives him much of a shot.)

Talk from Bonds today says he'll think about playing in 07 too. I'd wager Schmidt's next 3 starts will determine if he goes. Either extreme (shelled or superb) would give a definite answer.

I hadn't heard even a whisper of a Durham/Matsui swap, so I'm not sure how valid that is.
