Hearns is coming out of retirement.

I used to be a pretty hardcore boxing fan. Either way, this does not excite me too much.

DETROIT, United States (AFP) - Boxing legend Thomas "Hit Man" Hearns will return to the ring here on July 30 at age 46 and after a five-year retirement when he faces American journeyman John Long.

Hearns announced his comeback Friday, the 1980s American boxing icon saying he was returning to the ring at Cobo Arena against Long, 35, despite his former manager and trainer Emanuel Steward trying to talk him out of it.

I can't believe it's only been five years since he retired.

For that matter, why's he fighting an old basketball player?

Is he getting ready to put out a line of easy-to-use grilling products?

I don't see why people insist on making comebacks in boxing. In other sports, sure. But not boxing. There can't be that much appeal to getting hit in the face.

If these guys really just needed the cash, they'd unretire, take a decent jab and go down. Pays the same.

George was a decent fighter after he made his comeback. Not great, but he was ok.

It's remarkable how many of those guys end up doing comeback bids, though. Isn't Foreman really the only who has had some success at it, not just in the ring too?

They're buying lottery tickets and paying with their face.

It does seem like he's been gone alot longer than five years though.

No, but he did name all of his boys Thomas.

Good enough to win back the title, 20 years after he lost it.

In some ways, he was actually better in his comeback career. For instance, he could go the distance.

It's not surprising that 40-something ex-boxers look at the guys winning titles today and say, "Hell, I could beat that guy!"

Boxers also say things like, "He just caught me with a lucky punch." And, "I think the extra weight makes me stronger."

And, well, every once in a while, they're right.

Overall, though he wasn't anywhere close to the fighter he'd been.

Honestly, Foreman winning the title back was really the thing that stopped me paying attention to boxing. It was verifiable proof of the old geezer's dictum that the good ol' days were better. I like Foreman, and I was happy to see him win, but the fact that he COULD win just made the heavyweight division look like a SOC. It wasn't really planned this way, but I haven't paid much attention since.

Of course, the limitations of a 46-year-old are obvious. But a puncher always has a chance to win the heavyweight division, and he could still punch. Do you think it's impossible that Foreman II could have beaten, say, Ezzard Charles or Floyd Patterson?
