Pinella goes to the bullpen....
...to start the game!
http://www.sptimes.com/2005/07/06/Ra...o_starti.shtml It would be something if he did this and they rattled off 5 in a row or something! |

When is Lou just going to start carrying a "FIRE ME" sign around with him?

The team sucks... why not try this?

Is the plan here that, instead of blowing a lead in the 8th and having only an inning to get back, they'll just start being down a couple runs and have plenty of time to come back?

I've thought about this idea before and, in theory, it makes some sense for teams with poor bullpens.
Let's say that your team ace is rested and ready to go today and you bullpen is rested as well. Your ace is usually good for 7-8 innings, but sometimes only 6 and sometimes (although rarely) 9. You can: a) Send out your ace for 7 innings then turn it over to the bullpen to hope they hold on. b) Send out your bullpen for 2-3 innings then decide, based on the score at that time, whether to use your ace or not for innings 3+. One way to look at it is that your bullpen is going to have to pitch 2-3 innings anyway the vast majority of games. Shouldn't those innings be at the start so that you can decide which starter to use based on how winnable the game is? |

This idea is mentioned in Moneyball, and I'm sure there is research that shows it can work. Especially in the NL, it allows you to play with a DH if you keep pinch hitting every two innings or so.
I tried this in my solo league, Montreal Expos 2000, and Jason Isringhausen and Guillermo Mota both recorded victories

Pinella has down this before. I believe it was during a Chris Bosio start as punishment for something or other. The A's may have done it once in the past 10 or so years as I recall as well.
Go for it Lou, since this probably your last season as a manager. |

I picked the Rays to finish in third this year... oops...
But this still does seem like a rather odd thing to do. How long will he try this assuming it works the first game? Should be interesting to watch. |

Hasn't Pinella done this "Starter by commitee" tactic before? Or was that LaRussa?

Last season as a Devil Rays manager yes, but unless he retires, it won't be his last period. In fact, if he's not managing the D-Rays next year, he will be managing in AL anyway.

It didn't work because LaRussa's idea had pitchers going 3 IP whether they were throwing a no-hitter or not, which meant he was forced to either remove a pitcher throwing BBs or mess up his rotation any time he allowed a pitcher to go more than 3 IP. It was simply not thought through very well.

I have seen some discussion about changing the role of the closer on ESPN today. It was brought on by Pinellas new tactic. Using your best reliever in the 9th exclusively is something I would love to see managers do less of.
I am glad Pinella's actions have brought some of these discussions to the forefront.

For the sake of argument lets say it works, and catches on. Would we just reverse the terms for starters and relievers, since their roles would be reversed? Or would we get to come up with some new, catchy titles?!
