Halofan Rosters MR
Does anyone else using Halofan's rosters feel like every MR in the league is God-like? I started a franchise playing as Tampa Bay in manager mode, and I'm playing out every game. Through various trades, I felt like my bullpen was a strong point on the team. However, after playing out about 8 games, I've noticed that it's a strong point on every team. Every single MR that comes into the game is at least 70/70/70 in my experience; and most of these pitchers are guys I've never heard of.
Has anyone else noticed something similar? Also, is there any way to just change the names in the original set without going through and doing it manually? The rating scale seems perfect, but I'd rather play with actual player names. |

I downloaded Halofan's latest set and that's what I'm commenting on.
Then I asked if there is any way to alter the names in the original set (that came with OOTP 6.5) without changing them all manually. |

The set that came with 6.5 is Halofan's I believe, just with the names changed.

yes the set in 6.5 is mine and as for the MRs being godlike, im not having any problems and this is the first time i know of someone mentioning the MRs being rated "too high" but as i mentioned, these ratings are based off of stats and not my oppinion....if they were based on my oppinion i would be hearing complaints daily because im much harder than the stats are showing

First off, take this as nothing more than constructive criticism. You're a great person for putting so much work into this.
But here's the thing: I don't understand how the OOTP 6.5 set is based on yours. I just did some quick searches of players by rating (all ability ratings), and here's what I got: 70/70/70, all pitchers: 6.5: 28 results Halofan: 77 results MR and CL only: 6.5: 20 results Halofan: 46 results 60/60/60, all pitchers: 6.5: 128 Halofan: 284 There's an obvious difference in the rating scale. The problem is that with ratings skewed higher, no players stand out as superstars and there seems to be inconsistency in stats at the top (since so many pitchers are in the 70/70/70 ability range). I'm not quibbling with your personal opinions or individual rankings, I'm just noting that I've found MR who have pitched an inning or two of pro ball and are 26 or 27 with 70/70/70 type ratings. |

the standard league that comes with 6.5 is halofan roster and Markus change the name to fictional. there bases on halofan 6.12 updated real roster he did. but since the game has come out, Halofan made another updated real roster for 6.5 so that why there different. |

the game roster set is mine by name but markus and OOTP adjusted ratings as they see fit so that has nothing to do with me on that end of things

Right, that's what I figured. The key component of a roster set are the player ratings, and these aren't the same in your Halofan set and Markus' 6.5.
And that just leads me to my point: if Markus and OOTP are changing your ratings (and making them lower), then maybe they aren't appropriate for the OOTP 6.5 engine. Again, this is constructive criticism and people love your set so maybe you shouldn't listen to me. But in my experience with your set, performance is inconsistent because there is little deviation in the ratings of starting players. I would say that at least 60% of starting players and probably of all relief pitchers have an average ability rating in the mid 60s. To get realistic statistics in OOTP you need actual deviation between players; ratings should be approximately normally distributed I'd assume. Your latest roster set is heavily skewed to the right; probably in part because many players with unrepresentative sample sizes have incredible statistics (i.e. Mike Lamb, many MR). Again, constructive criticism. I'd love to see a set from you in which 50 was an average ability rating. If you and your fans are happy with this scale, though, so be it. Thanks for your efforts and responses. |

the one thing you are forgetting is that the ratings are coming up based on stats that i am putting in. if i was to go back and adjust each one to the 50's (being the 'middle' of the road rating) then the set instantly moves from a statistically based set to my oppinion and other than the very first time i released it, i have not released a set that is based on my oppinion and i probably wont as it will cause too many problems......

But you created the formula for translating stats to ratings, didn't you?
I understand that you're using stats to generate ratings. I'm commenting on the formula you're using; it's obviously different than that of Markus' roster set and is giving skewed results. |

For example, if you import a historical league from the Lahman database, the ratings are purely translated from statistics; obviously no opinion is involved. Those ratings, however, are far lower than the scale in your set.

halofan roster for ootp 6.5 is based on his updated roster 6.12 he did. Markus just change the name to fictional. if you get halofan old updated roster he did for 6.12 you will see there the same. just Markus change the name to fictional. he didnt change the ratings at all. Halofan new updated roster he did for ootp 6.5 will of course be different than the roster that came with ootp 6.5 because he updated it after ootp 6.5 was release. |

he didnt only thing change was real name to fictional name. because Markus has no MLB license. again. halofan gave Markus his 6.12 version of his updated roster. since then halofan has made another update to his roster for 6.5 after ootp 6.5 came out. for ootp 6.5 its best to use custom league if you want to play fictional than standard league. for real roster, just download Halofan latest real roster. |

I can't find Halofan's older 2005 roster set. However, I highly doubt that you are correct, jb. He just said himself that Markus changed the ratings. Plus, the disparity between the two rating scales is so large that virtually everything would have been changed. If you are right, though, I'd love to get my hands on that set; so point me in the right direction please.
I don't understand why you are so intent on the 'best' way to do this or the 'best' way to do that. Downloading Halofan's roster set isn't the 'best' way to play a modern league, it's the way you choose to do so. Thank you for trying to help, but I don't agree with you on the optimal league structure. |

looks like he replaces it with his recent updated roster he did on 6/19/05. but trust me his updated roster for 6.12 was the same exact one that you see on ootp 6.5 for the standard league. just the name change to fictional. all the ratings was the same. |

yes the set is replaced during each update
as for the set in the game....Markus DID say that he would adjust ratings as he saw fit, but i dont know for certain if he did or not as i have not looked at the career.lg folder because i have my own leagues i have and use and do my testing with as for creating a formula to translate them into ratings, you are in fact incorrect. I did not create any formula EXCEPT for when i made my very first OOTP 6 set. When i had my set for OOTP 5, yes i had a formula, but the ratings are not done that way anymore and havent been done that way for some time
