Set up man to closer
Hi all,
In my solo league I have an underperforming closer and a set up man who is doing a gret job. I want to switch them up because I think the set up guy's ratings make him better suited for the closer job anyhow. My question is will these two pitchers suffer some kind of built in disadvantage for switching roles? (I was pretty sure an SP suffers going to MR but these two roles are so similar I wasnt certain) |

Quite the opposite. IIRC, Markus indicated somewhere that closers get a little boost in peformance. However, that boost comes with the role, not the pitcher. In other words, and contrary to what passes for logic in the MLB, some pitchers weren't born closers and others set up men; rather, they develop into whatever role they play.
In short: move him. Unless the closer has significantly better ratings and is just going through a rough patch; or, vice versa, the set up man has been especially lucky. |

In my solo league I had the same situation. I move my SU man to closer and had great success posted an era below 2, was slightly above as a SU man. After I seen he could close I traded my high priced closer and free'd up salary. Give it a shot after a month or two you'll know if it was the right move.

I switch MR roles around all of the time.
When going through an initial draft, I let everyone else draft the guys with the CL designation. I'll draft a MR later and make him my closer. |

going with the billyball philosophy I never have my best relief pitcher as my closer so often the guy on my team that has the CL tag pitches in middle relief or setup.

In my online league, I traded away my closer who had just gotten a big raise through arbitration and put one of my top setup men into the closer role. He went on to lead the national league in saves with 46 and had an ERA of 2.29. That certainly paid off.
Now I just need better supporting pitchers to get to him.
