It's a Mike Simms World
Starting the month of August 1970 in my random debut league. Mike Simms, a dude that never had 200 official at bats during a Major League season is running away the home run race with 34 home runs. He's at least 10 home runs ahead of his closest competitor. Simms is also the RBI leader in the NL Back in 1998 Simms hit 16 home runs over the course of 215 plate appearances. Just so happens that's the season the OOTP gods decided to bring him into my league. 3 year double weighted recalc combined with the OOTP Development Engine. I expect recalc to crush Simms rather quickly, but I'm loving this season in the sun for such a little known player.
Can't wait to see just how many home runs Simms ends up hitting. Can he reach 50? His team the Chicago Cubs are still in the thick of things, but trail both the Cardinals and Mets in the NL East. |

I have him at AAA in my Bucs Redux save. Hopefully he pulls the same trick there, although it's a 1-year recalc environment. He had plenty of pop at AAA, which won't hurt his chances around that big '98 anomaly. We shall compare notes down the track.

Up to August 17th and Simms now has 40 home runs and 98 RBI.
I've created quite a few random leagues since getting OOTP27. Guessing Caven Biggio has been in around 98% of the leagues I've created. Even had one league where him and his dad ended up on the same team following the inaugural draft. Michael Taylor is another guy that's shown up in the vast majority of the leagues I've created. Every version seems to have a player or two that just seem to appear in almost every random debut created. A few years back it was Paul Molitor. Crazy thing is, I don't think I've had Molitor in a random since that time. |

Up to September 21 1970 and Mike Simms now has 48 home runs and 125 RBI. His Cubs are pretty much out of the race. The New York Mets barring disaster should win the NL East. Their magic number is down to 7.
The early 70's are always a crazy time to play in regards to relief pitchers. Got a guy pitching out of the bullpen and in amongst the league leaders for wins with 16. Wonder how many blown saves he has? Going to be interesting to see if any pitcher reaches 20 wins. Dizzy Dean and Don Newcombe probably have the best chance to do so. Didn't remember Dan Haren being a good hitter.(I don't remember a lot of stuff, so not questioning OOTP) OOTP has him operating as a 2 way player for the New York Yankees. He is the backup 1B for Willie McCovey when he isn't on the mound. He's hitting roughly .270 on the season. |
