Pitcher "hold" ability

If I have a pitcher with a poor hold rating, and I am playing out my games, should I generally be throwing to 1st more often and not bothering with the hold runner option?

If I don't use the hold runner option, does that mean my pitcher is completely disregarding the runner on 1st; or is it just a matter of priority?

They're two different things. On the pitcher side it's likely a slow delivery but may include a poor pickoff throw. As an in-game option it may affect pitcher command/control. If your pitcher has poor control avoid hold runner for sure IMO. Throw over while understanding the risk. If you have to; pitch out. Not my cup of tea either.

No but a poor hold rating makes it seem so.
