Stats lab help

As my name suggests, I'm not that computer savvy. I need some help. I posted the following over in the mods forum but am hoping to get better traffic and or willingness to help here. My message reads:

Well, I don't know if it is better, but after installing for the fourth time, now I only get the error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '$' in /home/fantasyf/sqldump/dbopen.php on line 1

My dbopen.php file reads:

<?php$db = mysql_connect('localhost','user_deleted','password _deleted') or die('Could not connect: '.mysql_error()); mysql_select_db('db_deleted');?>

I typed deleted over my user,password and db data information.

Can someone please help? I'm just trying random things now, gasping for air.

Tech support doesn't offer assistance for 3rd party mods or any mods for that matter.
Your best bet is to post your problem and include the exact version of statslab you're running in the active thread here (It covers both 13 & 14).
