catcher's influence
Hi all
Does the catcher has any influence on the pitcher's performances? Also, can a smart catcher help the developpment of the young pitchers. Same thing for the coaches, do they influence the developpement of young players? Also, I have a few ? regarding the young pitchers. Per example, can a young MR turn into a SP someday? Can he learn one or two new pitches? Is there an influence from his work ethic on his developpment? Is it a bright idea to draft a young MR with 2 pitches in first round, hoping that he will learn 2 more picthes and turn into a star SP? Thanks |

No, you can't direct a pitcher to learn new pitches, it's totally random in '11. It actually happened for one of my draftees, a 14th rounder out of HS, he went from basically a run of the mill 60 potential reliever to the top prospect in baseball 80 potential.
But you can't go to a guy with 80+ rated fastball/slider (1-100 scale) and say: I want you to work on a change/curve. Edit: I'd assume a coach with outstanding/legendary attributes at teaching pitching would be highly influential on a pitcher. Catchers - I'm not sure about.

Considering catcher defense is more or less irrelevant, I'd be mighty surprised to see that they have some effect on pitching.

When the usual gang chimes in here you're going to wish you hadn't bought up the subject, based on previous threads about the same topic.

2. Yes, it's possible for him to learn a new pitch. 3. Hard to say, as Markus doesn't reveal those sort of things, but generally speaking a kid with high intellegence/work ethic probnably has a better chance than a kid who's low in those attributes. There is no guarantee though. 4. Depends on your team needs, etc. If you can afford to use an early pick on a MR in hopes he will turn into a SP, then no harm in trying. Again, no guarantee it will happen, it's pretty much random. |
