All Star Break

The Royals reach the All Star Break one and a half games up on division rivals the Padres for the last Wild Card spot.

This is solely based on the first month of the season with the Giants posting a losing record in every month since, with a 4-8 record for July at the break.

The Giants have a solitary All Star selection in 2052, a return that reflects the team’s performance better than their current record. CL Rickey Martino has 20 SV at a 87% rate, boasting a 2.43 ERA with a 67 FIP-. Martino may be the only Giant selection but is a deserving, not a mandatory All Star for the first time in his career.

CL Rickey Martino (SF) - 4-2, 20 SV, 2.43 ERA, 33.1 IP, 1.14 WHIP, 10.0 K/9, 1.0 WAR

The Giants have more success in the All-Star Prospects game with three selections. 2049 International Amateur signing Arturo Varela and 2051 1st round pick Beau Wartel are joined by trade acquisition Dan Caines (2052 SD). The Giants top prospect 2052 IA Luis Burgos has a 178 ERA+ for his 7 GS but is currently injured otherwise might have earned a selection.

RP Arturo Varela (SF-A) - 2-1, 1.66 ERA, 38.0 IP, 0.87 WHIP, 13.5 K/9, 1.8 WAR
CL Dan Caines (SF-AA) - 1-3, 19 SV, 2.93 ERA, 27.2 IP, 1.12 WHIP, 13.7 K/9, 0.9 WAR
2B Beau Wartel (SF-R) - .266/.394/.428, 173 AB, 6 HR, 97 wRC+, 0.4 WAR

The catching corps has really struggled and Joey Haigh has lost his starting place post-All-Star Break. Juan Minnelli has his first positive month of the season and the Giants hope he can roll back the years for another couple of months.

The highlight was the first award of the Stewart era in San Francisco as RF David Balderas won a Batter of the Week Award, batting .458 (11-for-24) with 2 home runs, 6 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

Transactions & Injuries

July meant several moves by the Giants, as was Stewart’s MO in Kansas City. Andy Frederick missed a couple of weeks either side of the All-Star Break, but was back in the rotation by the end of the month.

The Giants picked up Nevo Clinton off waivers from Pittsburgh, the 2045 1st round pick providing average ratings in everyone except a below average eye to go with plus defense and a positive personality. Acquiring Clinton was Rogelio Tafoya DFA’ed and returned to Sacramento. In what will cause something of a logjam, 3B Danny Zellefrow was sent for an injury rehab stint.

July 21sy unfortunately saw Bobby Daniels suffering a torn labrum, an injury that has ended his career. In 5 years he contributed 0.1 WAR, including -0.4 this year, from 50.2 IP in 21 G and a 3.91 ERA.

As the trade deadline approached the Dodgers offered veteran CF Arturo Caamano, along with propsect RHP Frank Otero in exchange for organisational piece 2049 International Amateur Arturo Amaya. Kevin Simpson had been so poor that the Giants were happy to take a cheap upgrade defensively and the traded Simpson to the Mets in exchange for potential plus prospect LF Frank Calleja, and INJ CL Danny Bolton. Overall, the Giants improved their minor league system while also making a slight improvement in the short term to the Major League roster.

MLB Standings

A bad month for the Giants as they drop 3 games back from the playoffs. The NL West remains incredibly competitive with the Rockies and the Padres holding Wild Card spots and the Dodgers in last place in the division only 4.5 G back from the Padres. They are the last team with real aspirations so it is five teams for the last place, the Rockies and the Nationals comfortably ahead of the rest.

Transactions & Injuries

The Giants give call ups to a few of the 42-man roster with a chance for them to prove their worth for 2053. LF Wilfred Polo lasted two days before an injury ruled him out for two weeks the same day the Giants lost starting SS Joel Hudson for the rest of the season with a strained hamstring.

Another September injury was Kenvin Dobbs, straining a muscle in his back to rule him out for 3 weeks.

Wilfred Polo had time to come back and get injured again, this time being hit by a pitch that, while unlucky, has Stewart questioning his long term viability due to healthy.

The same is true, to an even greater extent, with Lane Mouland. Already having missed most of the season, Mouland came back on September 10th and suffered three day-to-day injuried in the remaining three weeks of the season.

The final injury was to SP Jaun Peralta who suffered a dead arm in his final start of the season.

Minor League News

September's standout hurler was Yasuhiro Oyama of Sacramento. He muzzled Pacific Coast League hitters and held them in check the entire month to capture the Pitcher of the Month award.

To win the honor Oyama compiled an impressive 3-0 mark and 1.57 ERA in 4 starts. The River Cats star hurler also rung up 29 strikeouts in 28.2 innings.

His record this season is 12-5 in 23 starts and Oyama has a 4.24 ERA.

There's something about a young rookie winning the California League Pitcher of the Month trophy that sends shock waves through the league. Such is the case with Pete Lamar, a 21-year-old starter for the San Jose Giants.

In September, he topped off the month with a 3-0 mark and 2.74 ERA in 4 starts, tossed 23 innings, fanned 29 and held opposing teams to a .209 average.

In 12 starts this season, Lamar has recorded 4 wins and absorbed 2 losses. He has pitched 62.2 innings, allowed 64 hits, struck out 88 and has a 3.02 ERA.

The Royals won 104 games, extended their consecutive division title run record to seventeen (and playoff run to 24) but still didn’t earn the top seed with the World Series Champion Seattle Mariners winning 107 games. Those two are joined by the AL East winning Orioles, as well as the Road Warriors (in their first season in Columbus) from the Central division, and the Astros and Angels from the West.

Over in the National League, the Giants division rivals the Diamondbacks win the west, and the top seed, with 96 wins, with the Cardinals winning the central for the 5th time in a row to secure the second bye. The Mets took the East and will be joined in the Wild Card round by their divisional rivals the Nationals, and two more of the Giants rivals in the Rockies and the Padres.

International Amateurs

We just completed our monthly private practice with many young international amateur free agents who we hope can aid our club in the coming years. It was great to meet the players in-person and get to know them better, and I was able to improve my scouting assessment on all invitees.

None of the players exceeded my previous expectations.

However, a few invitees left me disappointed as they did not appear to match my previous assessment, although they may still end up being future stars:

Jorge Sordelli, 16 year-old CF out of Venezuela
Lean and athletic, Jorge Sordelli hails from Caucagüita, Venezuela. The power is more a projection right now, but he has above average power potential. He knows how to use his speed on the field. He shows a good knack for barreling the ball with a compact, clean swing, helping him to spray the ball around the field. Sordelli has potential to unleash his obvious talent both on the field and at the plate.

Jesus Rivera, 16 year-old CF out of Venezuela
Jesus Rivera is a wiry framed center fielder who was born in Barinas, Venezuela. He projects to excel at drawing walks. He has above average contact skills, a smooth swing with quick hands and good pitch recognition. He is a young player with above average power potential. Rivera has the potential to develop into a big league regular for the bulk of his career.

It’s an eight World Series for the Kansas City Royals who avenge their ALCS defeat to the Mariners in 2051 before defeating the St Louis Cardinals in a repeat of the 2050 World Series. It’s a fifth title in seven years as the dynasty Stewart built continues to dominate baseball.

Team Record:
A 79-83 record is about exactly what I predicted from this team. You did not disappoint me.

Acquire a player:
I know you worked hard to find a Most Valuable Player Award winner, and I definitely appreciate the effort. Ernesto Pantoja may not be the perfect player that fits the bill, but he's darned close to it and I can't be too upset about bringing him in.

Increase Attendance:
The numbers are definitely up from 2051. But still not quite to my targets. Really, the best way to get fans to game is to win games. Have you tried that?

Build your farm:
I am very impressed with the prospect pool you have built up here. I was only looking to become a top-6 team, and you've gone above and beyond. As we continue to improve the team, keeping a fully stocked farm team will make your task easy going forward.

Improve Team Chemistry:
To call this team dysfunctional is an understatement. Do something.

Improve your fan interest:
Fan engagement has bottomed out. What do you plan to do about it?

Long Term:
I gave you a goal in 2051 of making the playoffs in a few seasons. My deadline is not up, I only gave you the task last year and didn't expect immediate results. However, I'm not sure I feel too confident right now. I won't jump to conclusions, but I hope to see some progress towards this next year.

I am very happy with your performance in accomplishing the goals I have given you. I feel similarly about your handling of the team's on-field and front office management.

Prospect Review

MLB Farm Ranking

Quality over quantity, which isn’t Stewart’s long-term strategy, but the Giants rocket to the second-best farm in the league off the back of pitchers International Amateur Luis Burgos and 1st round pick Pete Lamar.

San Francisco Prospects

The Giants now have 7 Top 150 prospects and over 20 in the Top 500. Stewart is beginning to increase the depth of the talent in the Minor Leagues with quality investment in coaching and development.

Personnel

The Office of the Commissioner has informed you that the following staff members of the San Francisco Giants have left the team because their contracts ran out or they have been promoted:

1B Coach Jesus Petit

Petit is the only departure from the Giants coaching roster this offseason. With no appropriate coaches in the Minor Leagues (the Giants need a Catching Coach specialist) they will look outside of the organisation.

Retirements

In addition to the Giants Bobby Daniels, several prominent players called it a day in 2052. The Dodgers retired Josh Contreras’ #27 jersey, the SP ending with 205 W, 3296 K, and 68.5 WAR. Perhaps more surprisingly, The Kansas City Royals finally retired a number as Luis Danys Rhodes calls it a day and #80 will not be worn by another Royal. Rhodes ends up with 286 SV and has 941 G, with a 2.83 ERA and 37.1 WAR. He put up 20.7 WAR with the Royals across 8 seasons but Stewart can’t help but feel that Bobby Witt Jr. and Edgar Mir both made bigger contributions to Royals baseball.

Owner Goals

Two new goals for Stewart from owner Quivers – to produce another .500 season and to improve the Bullpen ERA. Stewart believes these will go hand in hand and is happy to commit to both of these goals.

Finances

You will have $246,000,000 available for the total team expenses. Given your current spending on staff and other costs, this should allow you a team payroll of around $160,000,000.

A $4m increase in budget from owner Marquis Quivers means the Giants can retain high investments in development and scouting, while still having funds available for investing in the team.

2052 Player Evaluations

The Giants exceeded their Pythagorean record by two games and posted only one winning month, that incredible 19-7 April. The offense was a bottom third of the league outfit, with only WAR hitting the top ten in the rankings. Over on the pitching side, the 2nd best ERA among starting pitching helped the Giants to a top five pitching and defensive performance; the bullpen’s 11th best ERA undoing many a good start.

Catchers

The Royals stuck with their two opening day catchers throughout the season, although Alejandro Dilillo replaced Joey Haigh in for the final third of the season. Both players were about 25% worse with the bat than league average with better than league average efficiency. Haugh didn’t manage to reach the Mendoza line with a .163 although did manage 16 HRs. Both players are arbitration eligible and there are question marks as to whether either should return.

Infield

Kevin Dobbs was above league average with a 107 wRC+ although he did miss a third of the season with injury and is a below average glove. Dobbs is fragile but will be on a league minimum contract for 2052 with options left so will be back. Juan Minelli was a below replacement level with -0.7 WAR and a -0.5 ZR. A $31.5m Team Option will certainly be declined at the cost of $3.8m.

Chris Foley was the Giants everyday 2B and put up 1.4 WAR with a wRC+ just below league average. A positive ZR with slightly below Defensive Efficiency means he adds some value to the Giants line up but at $10.5m a year for at least another two years this is a player the Giants would like to move on from if they can find any teams with interest. Ernesto Pantoja, the Rule 5 acquisition appeared in 118 G but only started 79, putting up a 111 wRC+ but with a -6.1 ZR. With option years left, and some potential growth according to scouts, Pantoja should be a part of the Giants future, if reliant on some defensive improvement to make his a viable everyday glove. Nevio Clinton was picked up on waivers from Pittsburgh but seems like a Quad A players might be his ceiling at this point although he wasn’t given a lot of runway. A minimum contract with a final option next year, Clinton will likely have a chance to earn playing time in 2053. Johane Felcio is another limited glove who didn’t have much opportunity in 2052. His above average power and plus speed could be an interesting combination if he can earn a spot in Spring Training; if not, he might not be worth the roster spot.

Due to injuries, Nate Krueger played 700+ innings at 3B this season, with a -8.6 ZR showing his limitations in the position. Unfortunately, this was combined with a wRC+ just one tick above league average, contributing to a 0.7 WAR for the season. A free agent, QO eligible, this offseason, this is likely another Captain the Giants will say goodbye to with his demands for 3yrs at $6.5/year. Danny Zellefrow was expected to the Giants everyday 3B but managed to start in just 80 due to injuries. It is back-to-back years of less than 100 G for the 29-year old and entering his penultimate year of arbitration the Giants might look to trade. Rogelio Tafoya was successful in a very small sample size but his track record suggests that a return to the mean would be due and, with the fragile 28-year old arbitration eligible, is likely to be one-and-done with the Giants.

SS Joel Hudson had his injury struggles but played 128 G and put up 3.4 WAR behind an elite glove and an almost acceptable MLB bat. The 24-year-old might have some power left to develop and, should that come to fruition, he will be an All-Star calibre player. Even without the power developing he is a valuable player on a league minimum salary in 2053 so is penned in to start at SS. Neither Esteban Aguirre nor Juan Bernal were ever expected to be anything other than emergency back ups and neither will be offered arbitration.

Outfield

LF Juan Zetino game the Giants the same thing he has done for three years now – an wRC+ of 110+, everyday availability and above-average defense, adding up to a little over 2 WAR. Zetino will have one more year of arbitration after next year so will be someone the Giants consider cashing in on depending on the market. Wilfred Polo made his proper debut in September and, despite an injury ruling him out for two weeks, showed enough promise to be fighting for a roster spot in 2053 – although that would necessitate a platoon against LHP, and likely in a DH role.

In CF, Ed Janiczek had 98 GS and put up a 93 wRC+ but was a below average glove. Keeping the Rule 5 acquisition all season gives the Giants options and there will be a place on the 42-man roster for Janiczek, even if starting CF isn’t the desired outcome. Midseason acquisition Arturo Caamano had a 76 OPS+ in his 41 GS for the Giants but his elite glove meant that was worth 0.4 WAR. He is wrecked and a free agent, so the Giants are likely to let him test free agency but it wouldn’t be a great surprise should he be back at the start of 2053 due to his glove. Sergio Ibarra was another September call up who showed flashes in his first taste of MLB, a 106 wRC+ with a .280 AVE enough to keep the Giants interested. An elite corner OF, the Giants would love to see him develop his range in the offseason to offer a true option in CF.

RF David Balderas is a disruptive influence in the clubhouse but also put up a 104 wRC+ for the season albeit with no power (.119 ISO). Another arbitration eligible player, the Giants will surely look at his market value before making a decision on his future. Sergio Miranda was league average (100 wRC+) with the bat but above average with the glove (1.098 EFF) and provided 1.3 WAR. A fragile 33-year old who is arbitration eligible it is unlikely the Giants bring Miranda back for next season.

Starters

The Giants had six players make more than 10 starts this season, plus Cason Willard whose injury limited him to 9 GS.

Andy Frederick was the ace of the staff, justifying his contract extension as he struck out 10.2 K/9 with a 77 FIP- and 4.5 WAR. Frederick has 5 years remaining on his contract, with 2053 a team friendly $12m.

Eric Mason, who earned his $2.5m contract when promoted from the Minor Leagues on April 20th, had a 95 FIP- with 4.7 BB/9, putting up 2.3 WAR. His contract will auto renew and the Giants will likely retain Mason, ideally as part of a spring competition for a starting rotation place.

Jesus Barbosa had 2.1 WAR but was worse than league average with a 101 FIP- and a 8-12 record. Barbosa was a Rule 5 pick who still has some potential growth which could help him solidify a rotation place for 2053 on minimum salary.

Edgar Castillo accepted his QO and stayed healthy enough to make 22 starts in 2052 but only put up a 98 FIP- with 1.5 WAR, a poor return for a $18.9m salary. Looking for a 5-year, $95m contract the Giants will let Castillo hit free agency.
Juan Peralta, the 2045 1st round pick, was given his first full season as a starter by Stewart and had a 104 FIP- in 151 IP. 1.7 WAR with some potential growth still possible. Peralta is entering his first year of arbitration and the Giants are happy to meet his $3m value for 2053.

Donte Lebeaux, the 2046 3rd round pick, made his debut and had 10 GS. He had a 3.51 ERA with 1.3 WAR in 10 GS as a starter but was even more effective in a RP role, a 2.55 ERA in 35.1 IP. He is fragile but will be in the mix for a starting role next season.

Relievers

Lebeaux was one of only four RP with a FIP- below 100. Amongst the other three was Lane Mouland who only managed 2.1 IP due to injuries whose injury record mean that his arbitration figure will not be picked up. Josh Parker pitched 45 innings with a 78 FIP- and a 20:7 SD:MD ration but did have 4.8 BB/9. Parker is arbitration eligible but injury prone; with such a weak bullpen, though, the Giants probably need to bring Parker back. The only arm that Stewart truly trusts is Rickey Martino, who had a 77 FIP-, 1.2 WAR, 32 SV, and a 25:5 SD:MD ratio. Martino will be on the league minimum in 2053, so a lock for the roster.

Amongst other relievers, there are three arbitration eligible players, none of whom will be offered a contract in Rob Clauss, Alex Shockley, and Prince Speech.

The Giants had seven pitchers with a FIP- above league average who will return on the league minimum salary if they are retained for 2053. Those are Darron Dougherty, Germão Ezra, D'Marion Pasek, Dan Caines, Jesus Celedon, Jaheem Cushingberry, and Jody Huber. Stewart would be happy to move on from all seven although Dan Caines, in his debut season, may be given another chance with his potential 65:50:50 profile.

November 2052 - Offseason

Personnel

The Giants move quickly to fill the coaching hole, appointing Manager David Colina, legendary at teaching Catching, to the 1B Coach role.

Saturday, November 9th , 2052
Manager David Colina signed as 1B Coach in San Francisco.
Signed 1B Coach David Colina to a 5-year, $450,000 per year contract.

Awards

It’s a quiet year for San Francisco as only David Balderas is a winner, taking the Great Glove award in RF. Kansas City players win several awards, including Mike Smither, who wins his 2nd Reliever of the Year Award, 11 years after his first.

Pre-Arbitration Extensions & Trades

The offseason started with Bobby Daniels formally retiring and the Giants formally voiding Juan Minnelli’s final year contract at the cost of $3.8m. Minnelli’s departure means there are only three contracts left from when Stewart arrived – Cason Willard, Chris Foley, and Andy Frederick. Willard and Foley are two players on the block this offseason, which would leave the Giants with almost complete financial flexibility.

Two of the RP that the Giants waived, Alex Shockley and Lane Mouland, were picked up by the Blue Jays and Red Sox respectively.

Pre arbitration also saw two trades as David Balderas, Great Glove winner but clubhouse disruptor, was traded to the Yankees for a prospect infielder, Guadalipe Barajas. This is a clear indication of the Giants rebuilding status. The second trade saw the Giants claim some return for the expiring contract of Juan Bernal, picking up a younger replacement in SS Danny Ralls.

Friday, November 1st , 2052
RP Bobby Daniels retired from professional baseball.
Voided the team option year(s) of 1B Juan Minnelli for a buyout of $3,800,000.
Monday, November 4th , 2052
RP Alex Shockley was claimed off waivers by Toronto.
RP Lane Mouland was claimed off waivers by Boston.
Wednesday, November 6th , 2052
Traded 26-year old RF David Balderas to the New York Yankees, getting 19-year old minor league 3B Guadalupe Barajas in return.
Wednesday, November 20th , 2052
Traded 29-year old minor league SS Juan Bernal to the Cleveland Guardians, getting 25-year old minor league SS Danny Ralls in return.

Arbitration & Qualifying Offers

A raft of players are not offered arbitration or qualifying offers and so move on from the Giants organisation. Following the start of Free Agency, San Francisco has 27 players on the 42 man roster.

Jorge Sordelli, 17 year-old CF out of Venezuela
Lean and athletic, Jorge Sordelli hails from Caucagüita, Venezuela. He has the potential to slam 25 homers a season. He needs to improve his pitch selection and understand game situations and counts to be anything more than an average contact hitter. He will never be known for his speed, but is an average runner. Sordelli can be a second division starter at center fielder.

Daniel Montoya, 16 year-old SS out of Venezuela
Daniel Montoya is a long, lean athletic shortstop who was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He makes good contact which should translate to a .250 batting average. He should be able to provide above average defense as a shortstop. He runs the bases with speed and smarts. Montoya could be an above average shortstop someday.

December 2052 – Off Season

International Amateurs

We just completed our monthly private practice with many young international amateur free agents who we hope can aid our club in the coming years. It was great to meet the players in-person and get to know them better, and I was able to improve my scouting assessment on all invitees.

None of the players exceeded my previous expectations.

However, a few invitees left me disappointed as they did not appear to match my previous assessment, although they may still end up being future stars:

Jorge Sordelli, 17 year-old CF out of Venezuela
Lean and athletic, Jorge Sordelli hails from Caucagüita, Venezuela. He has the potential to display above average power to all fields. He has consistent average to above average bat speed and could hit for a .250 batting average. He's an average runner, at best. Sordelli could be an above average center fielder someday.

Jesus Rivera, 16 year-old CF out of Venezuela
Jesus Rivera is a long, lean athletic center fielder who was born in Barinas, Venezuela. He has excellent patience at the plate and picks pitches he can handle. He can make hard contact which should translate to a .250 batting average. His raw strength and quick wrists should give him above average power. Rivera is a center fielder with plenty of tools and a lot of upside. He has potential to be a first division starter.

Draft Lottery Results

A great result for the Giants as they move up from 13th to 4th pick in next year’s draft. This should provide another chance to draft a long term piece for this Giants franchise.

1. Tampa Bay Rays (4)
2. Chicago Cubs (6)
3. Boston Red Sox (2)
4. San Francisco Giants (13)
5. Detroit Tigers (7)
6. San Antonio Avalanche (5)

Rule 5 Draft Trades & 42-man Changes

The Giants add several average potential prospects onto the 42-man ahead of the Rule 5 Draft and then picked up 8 players in the draft. It’s unlikely they’ll all make the opening day roster but the Giants are so weak that nothing is impossible.

Following the Rule 5 Draft, the Giants added several players to minor league contracts with options, as well as C Jesus Castro on a one-year deal. Castro, formally of San Antonio, is an above average Catcher, with average contact and power, with an above average eye.

42-man Roster Additions

Sunday, December 1st , 2052
Placed CL Danny Bolton on the secondary (42-man) roster.
Placed SS Steve Boyd on the secondary (42-man) roster.

Around the League

RF Sergio Miranda signed with the Cardinals on a one-year $1.82m contract that has the San Francisco Giants clubhouse feeling pretty good.

Players have publicly stated that the atmosphere in the clubhouse has been quite good, but behind closed doors they feel that without Sergio Miranda things will continue to improve.
