This game is firstly a resource allocation game. If you don't play the market and the resource game, you won't have a shot. There are plenty of free to play players that compete at the highest level, but they put a lot of time into the game and figure out the best way to make points so that they can snowball in tournaments into a consistent pp mechanism. If you are not willing to spend the time and effort to do that, and also not spending money, you will not be able to compete at the highest level.

This is one of the most fair microtransaction games out there. The fact that you can be a free to play player and compete with paying players isn't something you see in all of these kind of games. If you didn't get enough advantage for paying, nobody would pay, and i think this finds a good middle ground of time saving but allows those who are willing to put in the effort to match up with them.

Your best place to find F2P players is the OOTP Discord. You can ask in the general PT26 channel, and there are sure to be several people would be able to offer you advice.

There are groups of people who do F2P. BFF is one of them, but you should check around and talk to as many as you can to find the best fit.

F2P can be done, it just requires a pretty good time commitment to replace your credit card. Your knowledge of the game and ability to learn will also impact your experience.

I committed to a healthy sum, but only after playing free for almost 3 months. Probably too late, with all the front loaded folks, but I want to compete into September and am trying to quantum leap. High Gold will be a victory.

Took almost as long to get consistent overnight packs from daily tournaments. Still cant win quick tourneys, though, I think variants have broken beyond redemption.

I imagine variants are the way whales get to and stay in PeL. I don't expect to ever get even close to PeL, but I'm hoping I can squeak into a HD league at some point soon.

Not exactly; while there have been some variants on rosters in the Perfect League World Series broadcasts, rosters haven't exactly been littered with them, and there have been matchups where there are variants on neither roster.

They're more of a help for tourneys than league, since the rarity of perfect variants plus mission cards plus quick meta shifts impact the highest level of league.

couldn't have said it any better, so I won't even bother trying.
