Phillies Outfielder Joe Marty.
Acquired from the Cubs in 1939,
Joe Marty was a .270 hitter who played a good
defensive Center Field. At age 28 he was drafted
into military service During World War Two before
the 1942 season. He was unable to return to the
majors after missing four seasons to Uncle Sam
and his once-promising baseball career ended.
(All Photos of 1939 & 1940 Philadelphia Phillies are from "The Conlon Collection". The family and estate of legendary baseball photographer, Charles Conlon teamed up with The Sporting News to produce a card set of black and white photography baseball cards during the first half of the 1990s that includes over 2,000 cards of players who played major league baseball from 1905 to 1942. Many of these players were featured on a baseball card for the first time ever in the TSN/Conlon Collection.)
