05/08/1973 - Cardinals Need Extra Frames to Get Past Giants
The Cardinals grabbed a win, 5-1, at Candlestick Park, overcoming a fine effort from San Francisco pitcher Tom Bradley. Bradley went 9 innings and allowed 1 earned run. The winner was Al Hrabosky in relief. His record improves to 5-1. Ron Bryant took the loss. The Giants drop to 14-16 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1973 season.
The Cardinals got a big at-bat from center fielder Bake McBride. For the game, McBride went 1 for 1 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the top of the 11th, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave St. Louis a 3-1 lead.
"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," McBride told reporters after the game
Kingman spoiled the shutout with a solo shot in the last frame for the Giants off RHP Rick Wise. It was the 50th career homer for the young slugger.
