First thing to check would be the saved_games folder to make sure the game's actually being created - if it's failing to write anything there during the league setup, that'd explain the crash. If you look in that folder, do you see .lg subfolders for the leagues you've tried to create, and do those contain a bunch of .dat files and some additional subfolders?
