GANS RETAINS LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE
Joe Gans defended his title with a 15UD over Jem Carney on 12-27, 1902. Gans used his superior defense and quickness to dominate the fight throughout.
Gans dropped Carney with a 3 punch combination in the 13th, and appeared on his way to a rare knockout in the 14th, when a cut under his left eye put him into defensive mode and he stayed outside the rest of the fight.
Gans ran his record to 10-1-1 and Carney fell to 7-4.
I had it 146-138. Tom Trunzo at ringside had it 146-137. The official judges had it 145-139/143-140/146-137.
On the undercard Edward Rollins (5-8) knocked out Denny Kelliher (3-6-2) in :32 into the fight. This marked the second time a fast KO happened on the undercard of a Gans championship bout.
