JOHNSON TAKES CARE OF BUSINESS
In the first of 4 title fights in the month of July, Jack Johnson (13-1) won a tune-up bought over #38 Bill Farnam (6-7-1) with a 5th round KO on July 2nd, 1903. It was Johnson's 2nd title defense.
Farnam was hanging around and scoring some points before he got careless in the 5th. He had actually won 1 round. He seemed to hurt Johnson with an uppercut early in the 5th. Johnson backed up to the ropes and Farman, sensing his chance for an upset, went after him wildly. Johnson withstood the flurry and landed a brutal left hook dropping Farnam for a 9 count. He struggled to his feet and then got put down for good 25 seconds later.
