I do this via having another tournament added that starts after the season. It might be possible to do it during the season like soccer but that would be tough with scheduling, etc, and I suspect teams wouldn't "know" they had games on weekend vs middle of season.
anyway I have a tournament called Champions League and simply add in teams who finish top 4 every year. this way it keeps track of stats for Champions League and history in a way that association playoffs do not. associations don't really work
