LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT

The LBA lightweight title fight is set between Joe Gans and George Lavigne.

Lavigne barely beat out several other fighters to be the first with 8 wins.

Both fighters will enter the ring 8-1-0. The fight will be in May of 1902.

According to the rules governing the LBA, both fighters will have to stage their first title defense against the fighter who beat them. Gans would have to face Jack Blackburn who knocked him out in the 7th round in Jan 1902 (yes he is fighting for the title despite coming off a loss). Lavigne would have to face Harry Gilmore who won a UD over Lavigne in Aug of 1901.

Jack McAuliffe narrowly missed out on the title fight, winning his 8th fight 7 days later. Also Billy Meyer has sat idle with 7 wins for 5 months.

the Lightweight division has been the most competitive non-Heavyweight division so far, and looks to stay that way.

I personnally am root for Lavigne since Gans tends to put me to sleep.
