Post Season Transactions October 1969
The St Louis Cardinals have traded CL
Dave Giusti with C
Dave Ricketts to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for 3B
Frank Vanzin and LF
Carl Taylor. The 29 year old Giusti was 7-2 with 2 saves, a 1.86 ERA in 28 games including 12 starts with the Cardinals. The Pirates are looking at
Giusti as a full time closer, using his variation of the change-up... a palm ball. The 34 year old Ricketts hit .167 with 0 HRs and 0 RBIs in 24 at bats for the Cardinals. The 25 year old Taylor hit .312 with 3 HRs and 30 RBIs in 104 games for the Pirates in his rookie season.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have released SP
Jim Bunning. The 38 year old was obtained in a trade after SP
Don Drysdale was forced to retire this season. In 1969, Bunning was 17-10 with a 2.64 ERA in 34 starts for the Pirates (25) and Dodgers (9). Bunning had a perfect game for the Phillies in June 1964, it was the MLB's 7th perfect game recorded in MLB History since 1880...... The Philadelphia Phillies signed Bunning a week or so later as a free agent.
The New York Mets have released 3B
Ed Charles. It appears to be the end of the line for the 36 year old as he hit .265 with 5 HRs and 32 RBIs in 87 games this season. Nicknamed the "Poet", Charles wrote poetry concerning baseball and racism.
The Cincinnati Reds have released
Pedro Ramos. The 34 year old was 0-0 with a 4.63 ERA in 8 games (11 IPs) last year with the Pirates (1) and Reds (7). Over his career since 1955 with the Senators, Ramos has been among the leaders in HRs by a pitcher with 15. This includes 3 seasons of 3 HRs from 1961-1963.
