We had to get some pitchers up here from Vancouver (A), so that we are not forced to pitch a CG today. RF Greg Unser (28-R) and RP Steve Stewart (24-L) were sent North with assurances that they would be back in 10 days at the longest. With Stewart, we meant it sincerely.... RP Jon Weekley (28-R) and SP Bill Woodward (23-R) were recalled.

Denver Bears (40-30 .571 0.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (47-25 .653 1.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

DEN: Bob Jangula (35-R 5-2 5.08) vs. POR: John Krawczyk (25-L 3-1 3.32) Rookie

Jangula was 5-13 with a 4.87 ERA in 31 starts for St. Louis last year. He became a free agent and Montreal signed him in February, but released him a little over a week into the season without using him in a game. Denver signed him on April 17. He gave up 4 runs in 5 IP in his last start and had a no decision. We have never faced him.

Krawczyk lost his last start, but only gave up 5 hits and 3 runs in 6 IP.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Metropolitan Stadium
Weather: 63 F, Partly Cloudy, with an 8 MPH wind blowing in from right
Attendance: 23,561

Top of the First:
Bob Ellis strikes out looking! Eric Daniels fouls out to 3rd. Tom Boyles strikes out! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

A.J. Lee grounds out to short. Jerry Suazo lines a hit to center. Enrique Ramos pops out to 2nd... Oscar Trejo swings at the first pitch and flies out to right.

Top of the Second:
Jim Jaeger hits a home run down the right field line... 1 to 0, Bears.

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 2 outs, Kim Springer hits a home run to right! Tie Game: 1 to 1. Big Offense!

Top of the Ninth:

On the Hill: Rich Larkin (24-R), after striking out Tom Boyles and Jim Jaeger in the 8th. Johnnie Graham flies out to center. Colin Woodford flies out to left, Kim Springer making a great running catch! PH Harry Garcia (35-L), batting .273 with 5 HR in 55 AB, lines out to center!

Bottom of the Ninth:
P Bob Jangula is at 89 pitches. 3-4-5 up for us, but the 4 spot is currently occupied by the pitcher. Enrique Ramos grounds out to short, and my dreams of him hitting back to back walk off home runs are ruined.... PH Tim Higbee (21-S) is sent up. Glenn Snowden (27-R) was used last inning, to no avail. Higbee swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd... It just does not matter who the pitcher is, we cannot hit anymore.... Denny Peters lines a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit. Jeff Galka lines a hit to right and Peters beats the throw to 3rd! Kim Springer, who has been our whole offense with his home run in the 7th, swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd....

Extras!

After 24 innings, yesterday....

Top of the Tenth:

New Pitcher: Jon Weekley (28-R). PH Victor Maldonado (29-L), batting .308 with 1 HR in 26 AB is sent up. The 1 HR was hit against us on Thursday in the 9th inning to put them ahead to stay... He grounds out to short! PH Joe Taylor (23-R), batting .333 with 18 HR in 246 AB, strikes out! Bob Ellis grounds out to short! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Bob Provost (26-R), who pitched a perfect inning yesterday. With 1 out, Glenn Snowden grounds a hit to center. With 2 outs, he gets picked off at 1st....

Top of the Eleventh:
2-3-4 up for them. Eric Daniels lines a hit to right... Tom Boyles beats out an infield hit... Are we going to have one of those innings where 7 straight guys reach base? Jim Jaeger swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses! Johnnie Graham pops out to center! Colin Woodford grounds out to short!!

Bottom of the Eleventh:
Jerry Suazo bloops the softies hit I have ever seen just over the shortstop's head! Enrique Ramos also bloops one, but his does not get over the shortstop's head and is caught. PH Juan Rojas (25-S) grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6. Denny Peters grounds one to 2nd, but Colin Woodford throws the ball in the dirt at 1st for an error. Jeff Galka lines out to center...

Top of the Twelfth:

New Pitcher: Bill Woodward (23-R). Juan Rojas stays in the game to play 2nd and A.J. Lee moves to 3rd. SS Rick Hansen (25-R), a rookie who is 2 for 9 on the season, doubles to left center.... We are not going 24 innings today... PH Hughie Scott (31-S), who is 2 for 19 (.105), grounds out to 2nd and Hansen goes to 3rd. We walk Joe Taylor intentionally. He steals 2nd... He is very slow, but P Woodward will not pay attention to runners... Bob Ellis strikes out! 2 down. Eric Daniels lines one to the gap in left center, but Jerry Suazo runs it down!!

Bottom of the Twelfth:
New Pitcher: Larry Matteson (28-L). PH Jack Hinckley (28-R) strikes out. Rick Mansoor flies out to center. Glenn Snowden swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run to right center!!! 426ft.! And THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 2 to 1

We had 11 hits and made 1 error
Denver had 7 hits and made 1 error

9th straight game we have scored 3 of fewer runs in regulation....
In April and May, in 50 games, we were 2 runs shy of averaging 5 a game (4.96).
In June, in 23 games, we are averaging 3.09....
And that is per game; per 9 innings, it would be even less....
Okay, I figured it: per 9 innings, we are scoring 2.85 runs in June....
We are 12-11 in June, despite our offense...

John Krawczyk went 7.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks (1 INT) and struck out a career high 9. It is a new season high for the Beavers. At bat, he drew a walk.
RHP Rich Larkin faced 5 batters and got them all out with 2 strikeouts.
RHP Jon Weekley went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits and struck out 2. It was his 1st scoreless outing for the Beavers this season.
RHP Bill Woodward (W 2-2) went 1 scoreless inning, allowed 1 hit and 1 walk (INT) and struck out 1. It was the 1st relief appearance of his career.

Bob Jangula went 9 innings, gave us 1 run, 8 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 3.
LHP Larry Matteson (L 4-3) got 2 outs, gave us 1 run, 1 hit, a home run and struck out 1.

CF Jerry Suazo had 2 hits. RF Enrique Ramos had 2 hits. SS Denny Peters had a hit and a walk. LF Kim Springer had 2 hits with his 7th home run of the season. 1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits with his 15th home, his 1st in over 3 weeks.

Editor's Note: The 1 game a day restriction did not work in changing our luck on offense and I want to play OOTP today....
