I am not superstitious, but my Grandpa was, even though he said he wasn't, so I am taking some precautions in his honor. I have a rabbit's foot in one pocket and a 4-leaf clover in the other, but only to honor my grandfather, not because I believe in any of that nonsense.

Hey! Trudy! What's this? Just one cold compress prepared for the game?

"We have never used more than one in any game, ever."

Yeah, that's because we have had 8 of them ready. With just one, we will for certain need a second. Make up 8 just like usual!

We are in sunny San Diego to play a 3 game series over the weekend. The Padres are off to a rough start, losing their first 8 games of the season. Today is their Home Opener. They just lost 3 of 4 in Denver even though they outscored the Bears in the series, 22 to 21. The Padres are 11th in the PCL in scoring with 3.80 runs per game (Portland is 13th with 3.60). They are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 5.20 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.00).

Portland Beavers (6-4 .600 2 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (1-9 .100 7 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Steve Muir (26-R 1-0 1.98) vs. SD: John Riley (25-R 0-1 4.63)

Muir gave up 2 runs in 6.2 IP in his last start, notching his first win. Hew walked 1 and struck out 7.

Riley is their #1 starter. In his first outing, he gave up 5 runs in 3.2 IP, but his last time out, he only allowed 1 run in 8 innings, but his Bullpen blew the save.
