1927-28 NHL Regular Season
A month and a half into the season, and last years breakout star,
John Ross Roach has played just 1 game for the
Leafs. He won that game, making 24 saves, allowing one goal, putting up a 98 game rating. The
Leafs just renewed
JRR’s contract for 4 more years. They are starting
Roy Worters, who is a excellent goalie himself, but he’s listed 2nd on the depth chart.
Worters is doing fine. 1.54 GAA, SP of .925. It’s just weird. They should obviously trade on of these guys. Goaltending controversy in
Toronto!
Worters and Roach
About 5 or 6 deals go down before the Jan 31st trade deadline, but nothing really worth mentioning.
Hap Holmes gets traded again. This time to the
Blackhawks. It’s his 5th team in 3 years I believe.
The biggest story at the moment, is the defending champion
Canadiens are in major danger of missing the playoffs all together. They sit 4th in the
Canadian division, and are 5 points out of a playoff spot! They will need a huge push this last 3rd to make it. The Good news for the city is their sister team, the
Maroons, look like the best team in hockey. Man was I wrong about them!!
Last year, goals per game fell to 4.00. That’s more then half the offense gone from 1920, when we were seeing 8.60 goals a game. This year, it’s fallen even lower, to 3.97! The fans must like it though, as Attendance is averaging over 9000 for the first time ever. Here are the per game stats for the last few years.
Well they did it…so far. With 2 games remaining, the
Montreal Canadiens made up the deficit, and more. They now lead the
Leafs by 2 points.
Toronto’s final two games are against first place
Boston, and first place the
Maroons. Meanwhile, the
Habs get the last place
Rangers and the
Sens. 1
Habs win and
Leafs loss will seal the deal.
Ok, so that is kinda unexpected.
Toronto beats
Boston, while the
Habs lose to lowly
New York.
Toronto and
Montreal are now tied heading to the final game of the season.
Wow, the
Leafs come through against the toughest competition, and
Montreal, 6 time champions, who came back to give them a chance, fold when they had it in their hands!!
Toronto makes the playoffs!
The Rangers average just over a goal a game. This team might be worse then the
Quebec team that went winless!
It’s a defensive world. At the end of all this, goalies from this era are going to dominate the leaderboards. Look at those save percentages!!
Rangers rookie and first overall pick
Charlie Conacher started the season on the third line. By the end, he was a first liner. He finished the year with 9 goals and 10 assists. Not too shabby for a 18 year old on the worst team in the league! Sky is the limit!
Conacher
