As I'm still a total beginner in OOTP (although I have bought every version since 11, I have barely gave them much time as I always find them too daunting), I can only answer this question, but if I recall correctly, OOTPD have released one of the older versions as freeware, might have been 08 or something around that year, it obviously will lack the features that was added in later releases, but if you want to get a feel for the game for a few seasons, try and get a hold of that version.
I'm sure someone will correct me on the year of the free version.
