From The New York Evening World June 24 1899...Stunning upset as former world champ James Jeffries is stopped in round eight by unranked New Jersey fighter Joe Jeannette...Jeff scores a knockdown in the third round but Jeannette's left jab opens a cut over Jeff's left eye in the next round...Jeffries forces the action but the cut is widened in round six and made even worse early in round eight to the point where Jeffries' face is covered with gore and he is having trouble seeing punches....Police at ringside order referee Johnny White to stop the fight ignoring protests from Jeff's corner....White declares Jeannette the winner improving his record to 14-0-1 (8)....An examination of White's scorecard showed Jeffries ahead prior to the stoppage 4 rounds to 3....Later Jeff claims he had not had proper time to train after recovering from his fight with Johnson but refuses to comment on accusations from his camp that Johnson's gloves were loaded...
