Carlos Vidal hit a solo homer off Des Moines relief pitcher Bryan Garcia with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give St. Loiuis a 3-2 win in the opening game of a doubleheader at Busch Stadium (1997).
Des Moines had led 2-1 after 7.5 innings after Khalil Lee had singled with one out of River Walkers reliever Nick Lodolo, and following a pair of walks, scored on a Cody Bellinger sacrifice fly.
But St. Louis tied it in the next half inning.
Alek Thomas led off with a single off releiver Omar Benetiz.
A Jean Carmona bunt moved him to second.
Thomas scored on a two-out single from Larry Ernesto.
Garcia retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth, but the second pitch he threw to Vidal traveled 400 feet over the wall in left center to give the Walkers the win.
St. Louis starting pitcher Derek Gordon was impressive allowing one run on two hits over seven innings.
Nick Lodolo got the first two outs of the eighth inning before giving way to Danny Grigg.
It was Grigg (4-1) who went the rest of the way, retiring all four batters he face, to set himself up for his fourth win of the season.
