This Weeks Major Transactions

The California Angels have suspended LF Alex Johnson indefinitely a spokesman for the team announced. The 28 year old is hitting .293 with 2 HRs and 21 RBIs in 66 games. Johnson well known for being in trouble with his teammates and team management for not running out ground balls and lazy play in the outfield. Often in screaming matches with team-mates, it was a such an incident in the case that led to the suspension. Already fined 29 times during the season for various incidents, but it was a run in with a close friend and team-mate that was Johnson's demise. On June 13th, 1971 Johnson accused Chico Ruiz of pulling a gun on him in the clubhouse. The Angels management denied any evidence of a gun in the locker room and of course Ruiz did the same. On June 24th after Johnson refused to run out a ground ball, the Angels manager Lefty Phillips benched Johnson once again and the Angels suspended him. The Major League Baseball Players Association will later file a grievance. It was during this time it was confirmed the Ruiz in fact did have a gun. It was suggested that Johnson was dealing with emotional issues and that the Johnson had justifiable grievances including racism. This all would lead to an eventual trade after the season was completed. Ironically Chico Ruiz was killed in a car accident in February of 1972, Alex Johnson was one of the few ball players to attend the funeral.
