2027

Once again, Farel started the year as leadoff for the Red Sox. He was quickly becoming a fan favourite. He wasn’t afraid to talk to the media, no matter how small or independent the outlet was. He was humble in victory and gracious in defeat, always with a handshake and a good word for his opponents.

Farel played 154 games, missing 8 games in mid-August to marry Nimya in a small ceremony in Provincetown before spending a few nights away from Boston and baseball on Nantucket. Across the games he did play, Farel hit .233 with 8 home runs and 46 RBIs with a .703 OPS. That made him the 8th best hitter by average and 6th best by OPS. However, he led the team (and the majors) in walks with 110. In the field, Farel once again showed why it didn’t only matter about how hard you hit- 234 putouts, 407 assists and 114 double plays with an efficiency of 1.068 won him yet another Gold Glove.

With his rival Dan Termini now in New York, 2027 became a major point in their storyline. Farel went 9-for-9 against Rogers, including a magnificent walk-off home run to ruin a complete game shutout on September 7th. That led to the infamous ‘Wifegate’ incident. As Farel rounded the bases, Termini was seen throwing insults at him. And due to a technical error, the whole crowd heard the broadcast team debating what exactly Termini had been saying. The general consensus from the team in the booth was that Termini was making comments relating to Nimya. As the Red Sox were already on the field to cheer Farel home, they turned and immediately charged the mound. As they clashed with the Yankees stepping up to defend their pitcher, there were shouts from the crowd. A 5”6 blur had vaulted the dugout and was also charging the mound. Nimya, sat above the Red Sox dugout to cheer on her husband, had not taken kindly to Termini’s comments. She barrelled through pinstripes before tackling Termini and slapping him.

Given the extenuating circumstances, Nimya was politely asked to avoid attendance at Fenway for a year. However, it would prove largely unnecessary as Boston missed the playoffs by a game and quietly traded Farel to Minnesota early in the off-season. It wasn’t the worst thing for the couple- they both loved nature and were able to find a small cabin to rent outside Minneapolis. The Twins had gone 80-82 in 2027 but they had a strong, promising team including players like Royce Lewis and Taylor Trammell. The Twins could be Farel’s ticket to the playoffs.
