The Mets were impressed. They had seen Farel in Worcester and wanted his discipline in their system. His hitting was not the most desirable but there was every chance that he could improve. After offering him a minor league contract, he was sent to the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets' short season affiliate.

Farel suited up in the white jerseys for 42 games while adjusting to life in a small Coney Island apartment. As he acclimatised to the major league farm system, he build a small life for himself in New York, going as far as to start a relationship with a nurse, Jennifer Holland.

Farel batted .267 in 116 at-bats. However his power and extra-base stats were subpar, with 1 home run and 4 extra-base hits total. He still managed a OPS of .670 but once again, it was his fielding that made him a valuable asset. 47 putouts, 72 assists and 18 double plays with a 1.034 fielding efficiency.

His leadership continued to improve and he developed into something of a sparkplug, lots of energy that invigorated the clubhouse and the field. While not the captain of the team, his teammates certainly looked to him for inspiration.

Despite this, the Mets seemed unimpressed. In early December, Farel was told that he was being sent down to the rookie class Kingsport Mets in Tennessee. He ended things with Jennifer and packed his bags for Tennessee, unsure of what the future held but eager to find out.
