All you need are the actual images. The XML file doesn't actually do anything, but it does provide you with a fairly easy-to-read file so you can find all of the park factors and coordinates.

As far as using the park images, they should behave like any other. You can just put them in the "ballparks" folder along with all of the park images that come with the game and assign them in the ballpark editor in-game.

As far as player locations, dragging and dropping should work, or you can always manually enter the coordinates in the ballpark editor (note that the coordinates generated by the app may not be 100% perfect). If the changes aren't sticking, I'm not sure what to tell you other than to make sure you're setting everything for all three images - day, night and diagram.
