07/16/1972 - Kingman Back in the Lineup, but Fails in the Clutch
The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Francisco Giants, 5-1, in NL action at Candlestick Park, with Philadelphia pitcher Chris Short named player of the game. Short, the winner, moves to 7-5. He threw 6.2 innings of 1-hit ball, while fanning 2 and giving up 4 walks. Mac Scarce, credited with the save, is now 1 for 2 in save opportunities.
In the bottom of the eighth, Dave Kingman stood in the box, looking for a pitch to hammer. The Giants were trailing 4-1, but had runners on 1st and 2nd. That's when Mac Scarce made a terrific pitch and Kingman grounded out. Gone was the dream of a San Francisco comeback.
Philadelphia has 3 straight wins, San Francisco 3 straight losses.
