Saturday, June 22, Year II

P Frank Martin (27-R), our #1 starter, was put on the Disabled List and P Lonny Tomski (28-R) was recalled from Vancouver (AAA).

Seattle Rainiers (25-47 .347 20.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (45-26 .634 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SEA: Jim Alexander (26-L Major League debut) Rookie vs. POR: Dave Shoemake (27-R 2-0 1.61)

Alexander walked more than he struck out in the minors this season before being called up. Christy the PA has me rigged up with a special pair of gloves that protect my knuckles while allowing me to write so that I will not hurt myself too bad when we fail to score off this bum....

Shoemake has had 3 starts. 2 were complete games where he only allowed 1 total run, but the other was a stinker. The stinker was against Seattle...

Top of the First:

Bob Dillon lines a hit to center. Randy Hobson up and Dillon takes off for 2nd on the first pitch and gets thrown out by C Tod Schreck! Hobson swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to 2nd. Full count to Mark Fenik and he flies out to right!

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet pops out to 1st. Dave Lesley doubles down the left field line. Larry Sinchak grounds a hit to right and Lesley stops at 3rd. The first pitch to Jeff Austin is a wild one and Lesley scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Austin lines a 3-2 pitch to right center for a hit and Sinchak stops at 3rd. 1-1 pitch to Tony Casarez and Austin breaks for 2nd, but they have a pitchout on and he is out. 2 down. The count runs full to Casarez and he swings at the payoff pitch and grounds a hit to right and Sinchak scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Schottler flies out to center.

Bottom of the Second:
Woody Griesbach leads off with a hit, goes to 2nd on a wild pitch and 3rd on a hit by Tod Schreck. Yes, that is not a misprint; a hit by Tod Schreck. His fourth of the season. P Dave Shoemake bunts Schreck to 2nd. Paul Bouvet walks on 4 pitches. An intentional unintentional walk, I think. Dave Lesley swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right and everyone moves up a base and Griesbach scores. 3 to 0, Beavers! Larry Sinchak swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Schreck scores his first run of the year! 4 to 0, Beavers. 2 outs. Jeff Austin flies out to deep center.

Bottom of the Third:

Tony Casarez leads off with a double to right. Jeff Schottler lines a single to center and Casarez stops at 3rd. Woody Griesbach doubles down the left field line and Casarez scores! 5 to 0, Beavers! That sends P Jim Alexander to the showers. New Pitcher: Darryl Haynes (34-L), who threw 23 pitches yesterday. 2.80 ERA. Tod Schreck strikes out. P Dave Shoemake grounds out to short and Schottler scores. 6 to 0, Beavers! Paul Bouvet triples down the right field line and Griesbach scores! 7 to 0, Beavers! Another triple by Bouvet! Dave Lesley up and a wild pitch scores Bouvet! 8 to 0, Beavers! Dave Lesley grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Fourth:
P Darryl Haynes strikes out the side in order, but injures himself.
