San Francisco Giants RF Bobby Bonds was 3 for 3 with a HR and 2 RBIs in a 6-1 win over the Pirates. The 23 year old is hitting .304 with 19 HRs and 56 RBIs in 119 games. Bonds is in his 2nd season in he MLB, last year he hit .254 with 9 HRs and 35 RBIs in 81 games with the Giants.

Atlanta Braves SP Pat Jarvis allowed 2 hits and struck out 4 in a complete game 2-0 win over the Phillies. The 28 year old is now 15-8 with a 2.42 ERA in 29 games including 25 starts. In 1968 Jarvis set a career high with 256 IPs, he was 16-12 with a 2.60 ERA in 34 starts for the Braves.

Baltimore Orioles SP Mike Cuellar allowed 2 hits and struck out 2 in a complete game 1-0 win over the Pilots. The 32 year old is now 16-8 with a 2.12 ERA in 29 starts. Cuellar had a career high 246 IPs in 1967 when he was 16-11 with 1 save, a 3.03 ERA in 36 games including 32 starts.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Bill Singer allowed 4 hits and struck out 4 over a complete game 2-1 win over the Expos. The 25 year old is now 16-4 with a 1.56 ERA in 29 starts. Singer had a career high 256 IPs in 1968, he was 13-17 with a 2.88 ERA in 37 games including 36 starts for the Dodgers.

New York Yankees SP Bill Burbach allowed 10 walks in a 8-7 loss to the White Sox. Burbach also allowed 4 hits and struck out 4 and is now 9-5 with a 3.43 ERA in 19 starts. Burbach is in his rookie season.

St Louis Cardinals RF Vada Pinson collects his 2000th hit in a 6-1 loss to the Braves. The 31 year old is hitting .278 with 7 HRs and 45 RBIs in 113 games. Pinson started his MLB career by being signed as an amateur free agent by the Cincinnati Redlegs before the 1956 season. He was traded by the Reds to the Cardinals in October 1968 for Wayne Granger and Bobby Tolan. For his career, Pinson is hitting .296 with 193 HRs and 859 RBIs in 1678 MLB games. Pinson won a Gold Glove in CF in 1961 and is a 2-time All Star (1959, 1960)

Kansas City Royals CF Ed Kirkpatrick was named he AL Player of the Week. The 24 year old is hitting .290 with 10 HRs and 44 RBIs in 98 games. Kirkpatricks previous high for HRs was in 1966 when he hit .192 with 9 HRs and 44 RBIs in 117 games for the Angels.

Atlanta Braves RF Hank Aaron was named the NL Player of the Week. The 35 year old is hitting .284 with 19 HRs and 59 RBIs in 118 games. Aaron set a career high for HRs in 1962 when he hit .323 with 45 HRs and 128 RBIs in 156 games for the Milwaukee Braves.

This Weeks Major Transactions

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded SP Jim Bunning to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Ronald Mitchell, Chuck Goggin and cash. The 37 year old Bunning is 13-7 with a 2.69 ERA in 25 starts for the Pirates. Bunning had a career high 314 IPs in 1966 for the Phillies when he was 19-14 with 1 save, a 2.41 ERA in 41 NL leading starts. Bunning is the sole Major League baseball player to be elected to the US Senate and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. On June 21st, 1964, Bunning pitched a perfect game against the Mets.

The Montreal Expos released RP Roy Face, the 41 year old is 2-3 with 2 saves, a 4.18 ERA in 42 games. Face had a career high 135 IPs in 1955 with the Pirates when he was 12-13 with 6 saves, a 3.52 ERA in 68 games including 3 starts. Many claim the Face was the first real "closer". In 1959 Face had 18 wins...... in relief. This looks like the end of the road for Face.
