Today, the Mariners try to avoid being swept by the Athletics in their series in Oakland. In the first two games of the series, the Mariners blew ninth inning and eighth inning leads respectively. The Athletics have won four straight.

The Cleveland Indians signed 1B Jim Thome to a 4-year contract extension worth $54,800,000.

In the bottom of the third, Damon put the Athletics on the board with an RBI double. One out later, Jason Giambi brought Damon home with a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the fourth, Boone put the Mariners on the board with an RBI double.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Mariners committed two errors and Tejada made them pay with a three run homer.

Joel Piniero took the mound for the Mariners in the bottom of the sixth.

After six: Oakland 5 Seattle 1.

In the top of the eighth, with a runner on first and two out, Jeff Tam took the mound for the Athletics.

In the top of the ninth, with runners at second and third and one out, Chad Bradford took the mound for the Athletics. Bell brought Cameron home with a sacrifice fly. Wilson then struck out to end the game as the Athletics completed the sweep.

After the loss, it was reported that Joel Piniero and Aaron Sele got into an argument in the visitor's bullpen.
