The series shifts to New York and Madison Square Gardens with the series tied 1-1. Montreal G Bill Wolfenbarger has a miniscule 1.09 GAA and .955 SV% in 10 games during the playoffs. Prior to giving up 3 to the Rangers, in the previous 9 playoff games he game up only 2 once and the rest were 1 or he also had 2 shutouts. Montreal made a small line change for tonight. LW David Wass moved up the 2nd line while LW Randolph Lott moved down to the 3rd line.

Well the move with LW David Wass may have paid off early as he tipped in RW Zach Broderick's shot in at 16:16 of the first period for a 1-0 lead. C Patrick Atkins also assisted on the goal. The first period ends with the score 1-0 Montreal but the shots are 16-6 for the Rangers.

It is rare, but RD Steven Thornton is sent in all alone on a breakaway on a feed by C Patrick Atkins while SH and he beats G Larsen with his 3rd of the playoffs at 11:16 and Montreal are up 2-0. The Rangers get within one at 13:13 when LD Jozef Lancaric gets his 1st of the playoffs and it is now 2-1 for Montreal. The Rangers tie it up shortly after, C Tyler Mackey gets his 3rd of the playoffs at 15:27 and the score is 2-2. The period ends with the score 2-2 and the shots are all New York, 22-8.

The Rangers get the 3-2 lead at 4:56 when RW Spencer Hembling gets his 3rd of the playoffs. The Rangers extend the lead to 4-2 at 9:27 as C Guillaume Gauthier beats G Wolfenbarger down low for his 4th of the playoffs and Montreal are in a bit of hole with just 10 minutes left and down 2 goals. Seconds later the Rangers respond again, RW Spencer Hembling gets his 4th of the playoffs, 2nd of the night at 9:52 and it is now 5-2 New York. The Habs send Wolfenbarger to the showers and G Martin King comes in to clean up the mess. Montreal gets it back to 5-3 as LW Joey Mariani is sent in all alone and uses a head fake to beat the Ranger goalie at 13:57. LW David Wass gets an assist. Montreal is going to make it interesting, RW Robert Cull deflects LW Randolph Lott's shot for his 2nd of the playoffs at 17:11 and it is now 5-4 for the Rangers. RD Rinat Sadriyev gets an assist. The Rangers hold on for a 5-4 win and take a 2-1 series lead.

New York 5 Montreal 4 The Rangers lead series 2-1.

Rangers RW Spencer Hembling had 2 goals and was the 1st star. The 22 year old now has 4 goals and 5 points with 12 PIMs and a -2 rating in 13 playoff games. Hembling had a career high with 23 points during the 2002-03 season in 68 games with the Rangers and Sabres.
