1939 CAPE BRETON COLLIERY LEAGUE

Teams:

Glace Bay Miners
New Waterford Dodgers
Sydney Steel Citians
Sydney Mines Ramblers

All teams located in Cape Breton (Nova Scotia)

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G60_T4_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="60" start_month="5" start_day="27" start_day_of_week="7"

Each team plays either 59 or 60 games. Teams play each other either 19 or 20 times during the season.

Season starts on May 27 and ends on September 9. All games start at 7:00, except for holiday - Dominion Day (7/1), Civic Holiday (8/7), and Labour Day (9/4) - games which start at 1:00. No Sunday games.

The published schedule (Sporting News 3/30/1939) lists only 19 games between Sydney and Glace Bay. That may be a misprint, but there's no obvious place to insert an additional game. If I had to guess, Glace Bay should play at Sydney on June 7. A revised schedule with that game added is also attached.

This is a real curiosity. This league started up as a semi-pro circuit with teams comprised mainly of workers from the steel plants and coal mines of northeastern Cape Breton. It went pro and joined organized baseball in 1937, and was a Class C league in 1939. It was noteworthy at the time for being integrated, and was popular with its working-class fans. The war ultimately forced the league to shut down. You can read more about this league here.
