Danny Duffy pitched into the seventh inning and the St. Louis bullpen didn't allow a run as the River Walkers edged Quad City 2-1 in the opening game of a doubleheader at Busch Stadium (1997).
Tied 1-1, St. Louis took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning when Christian Arroyo led off with a single off Thunder starting pitcher Mike Montgomery.
Arroyo was eliminated at second when J.T. Realmuto hit into a fielder's choice, but a bunt from Duffy moved Realmuto to second.
Realmuto found third on an Albert Almora single.
Another single, from Andrew Benintendi, chased him home.
Duffy allowed one run on six hits in 6.1 innings. He struck out 10 and walked one.
The River Walkers sent seven pitchers to the mound over the final 2.2 innings.
John Curtisss, who got the final two outs of the seventh inning and the first out of the eighth, and Tommy Kahnle, who took over with a runner on second and no outs in the ninth, finished it off.
For Kahnle, the save was his fifth of the season.
