Maybe it's me. But MLB teams' roster construction increasingly baffles me. Watching Angels-Rangers now, because it's all that is on and I have nothing else to keep me company. (Go get a pet, they said.) They are playing two today, so there is a 26th man involved. Yet, this is the bench the Angels come up with:
Ohtani (DH)
Pujols (1B at best)
Stassi (C)
Now, what the heck are they going to do if anybody other than starting 1B Matt Thaiss or DH Justin Upton are tweaking a toenail? I know the AL plays with silly rules and doesn't have to bother with actual strategy, but are injuries not a concern? Everybody but the first baseman is expected to play two today? No rest, rotation?
Probably it's me. I am just overthinking this with my insistence of always having a super utility that can play at least four or five positions between infield and outfield and I will carry that sod around for years, even if he bats .191/.209/.250 every year.
