Transactions:
Placed SP Gehrig Pearl on the 11-day disabled list.
Purchased the contract of SP Robert Shepherd from Triple A San Juan.

He's back! Probably a start earlier than I was hoping, but the injury to Pearl mean I had to do something so here he is. He has 2 starts in AAA and threw ok. He went 10.2 innings total, allowing 13 hits and 10 runs, 7 runs in his first. The big stat that jumped out at me was the 4 HR's (2 in each game), but the 16 K's (8 in each game) makes me feel a little better. He is scheduled to start game 1 of the Blue Jays series next week.

Injuries:
MR Dani Rubio, Calf strain, Unknown, Ready*
SS Jose Ayala, Torn ankle ligaments, 1-2 weeks, 60-day DL
MR Dustin McNeil, torn UCL, 10 months, 60-day DL
OF Byung-Ho Ch'on, ruputred finger tendon, 3-4 months, 11-day DL
SP Gehrig Pearl, Torn triceps, 3 months, 11-day DL

Pearl going down is going to hurt, but being replaced by Shepherd makes it easier to take. On the season Pearl was 4-5 4.76 in 12-starts. I am starting to get concerned he will be on of those injury prone guys that has trouble staying on the field... After missing almost a month of games Rubio will head down to AAA to get a couple of rehab showings. That and I am not 100% sure what roster moves to make right now, she he may just be there very short term.

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
This was a rough week. I hate losing and I hate losing to teams that are trying to chase us done. The Iron Pigs made us look silly and the first game against the Blue Hens might have been our worst loss of the year, not only did we get blown out we lost our starting pitcher. That is just painful. I am glad we were able to pull out the final game of the week, setting up for a big final 2-games against the Blue Hens. If we can hold on over this week I will feel better. Despite going 2-4 against our division rivals some how we only "lost" 1/2 a game.

To start the week Gehrig Pearl left his start early with a sore elbow, that injury seemed minor, until later in the week when Patterson decided to throw him again. Now he is out for 3-months, a blow that could have been a lot worse it wasn't for Robert Shepherd coming off the DL. These are the injuries that I don't pay enough attention to, and when I don't bad things usually happen. Losing Pearl for 3-months hurts, not only because he was a solid starter, but because I feel like I am hampering his development by seeing him hurt and not able to pitch.

Last year I acquired Gregorio Costello in a deal that I thought turned out to be a steal. But Costello just hasn't lived up to the expectations I had for him. With Pearl out and Shepherd back Costello is now our #5 starter, he is a guy I acquired thinking he was a #2 or 3 easily! But his 1.46 WHIP this season shows how much he has struggled. He gives up too many hits (109 in 101.2) innings and can't strike out anyone (76 in 101.2). So far this year he is 4-6 4.60, following up on his 7-5 3.89 partial season with us last season. I was hoping for more of the same, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. I would deal him away, expect he IS our team leader. To find a player of his caliber, in skill and leadership would be tough. So he is here to stay out of necessity.

It is getting close to the point where I feel like I need to do something about this defense. Step one will be taking over the lineup's and getting Eugene Todd away from 3B! He now has 9 errors in 32 games over at the hot-corner, and an awful ZR (-4.0), and .901 FPct! He is a better 1B and an even better DH! I feel like this team might benefit with him at DH and Maxwell back in at 3B. But that would mean Lorenzo Leal would be back on the bench, which might not be bad thing. I am thinking about this and very tempted.

This is an early All-Star break, as we have one more week to go till the break. I am not sure if that is a good thing or not, but I do know in Chadds Ford we have always played better post all-star break. I am hoping 2038 will be the same. So here is to the final 6-games and a strong finish and most excitingly is the return of Robert Shepherd.

Lets go Cannons and lets start pulling away!
