Los Angeles Angels (18-17 .514 7.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (17-19 .472 9 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

LA: Sam Henderson (28-R 3-3 3.20) All-Star vs. POR: Roger Lerer (28-L Season debut)

Henderson is their #1 starter. He held us to 2 runs in 7 IP on Opening Day, in a no decision.

This will the first start of 2002 for Lerer. Two questions: will he be any good and will he make it through the game without getting hurt?

Top of the First:

Britt Snyder grounds a hit to right. Rodolfo Rosado grounds a hit to center and Snyder goes to 3rd. Irv Hill grounds a 3-2 pitch to center and Snyder scores and Rosado goes to 3rd. 1 to 0, Angels. Well, that's the first question answered with a resounding no... Charlie Allen grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4, and Rosado holds at 3rd. Dan Hamel doubles to right and Rosado scores. 2 to 0, Angels. The Bullpen is up. Fernando Vargas walks to load the bases up. Dale Schafer grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4, and Allen scores. 3 to 0, Angels. Bill Harris nubs one in front of the plate and is out, 2-3.

Bottom of the First:
We have never scored 3 runs off Henderson in a single game, so this one is already over.... Brian Mitchell grounds out to 2nd. Kim Springer takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three... Fernando Mexicano strikes out...

Top of the First:
With 1 out, Britt Snyder singles to center. Rodolfo Rosado grounds one to 1st and Glenn Snowden, the Gold Glover, boots it for his 8th error already this season... He only had 9 all of last year... They pull off a double steal and then a wild pitch scores Snyder... 4 to 0, Angels. Irv Hill strikes out. Charlie Allen takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Dan Hamel doubles down the right field lines and Rosado scores.... 5 to 0, Angels. Okay, I need to go get on the phone and try to trade for another starting pitcher... We have no one worth a hoot at Vancouver (A)....

Bottom of the Fifth:

We get our first hit of the game: a home run to right center by Rick Woodell. 5 to 1, Angels.

Lost - 5 to 1

We had 3 whole hits and made 1 error
Los Angeles had 8 hits and made no errors

Roger Lerer (L 0-1) went 3 innings, allowed 5 runs (3 earned), 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. He threw a WP.
RHP Garry Ayers went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 3.
RHP Jim Kokos went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 2.
LHP Chuck Purnell went 1 scoreless inning, allowed 1 walk and struck out 1.

Sam Henderson (W 4-3) went 8 innings, gave us 1 run, 3 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit.

3B Rick Woodell hit his 1st home run of the season. C Jim Shippy had a hit and a walk.
