We put CF Esteban Mondolfo (30-R) on the Disabled List and recalled CF Brian Mitchell (21-L) from Vancouver (A).

We are in Houston to play a 4 game series with the Astros. They lost 3 of 4 in San Francisco over the weekend, but ended the Seals' 15 game winning streak. We were 4-4 against them last year. They are 13th in scoring in the PCL with 3.55 runs per game (Portland is down to 15th with 3.39). The Astros are tied for 5th in fewest runs allowed with 3.65 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.97). Their run differential is -3 and ours is -18.

Portland Beavers (14-17 .452 9 GB in 6th place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (13-18 .419 8 GB in 6th place in the PCL East)

POR: Duke McKenzie (24-R 0-2 3.55) Rookie vs. HOU: Ed Sliney (28-R Season debut)

McKenzie only allowed 3 H and 2 R in 7.1 IP last time out, but walked 5 and only struck out 1. If he has a bad game today, he will go back to Vancouver (A).

Sliney spent April in New Orleans (A). Last year, he was 2-10 with a 5.19 ERA in 19 starts for the Astros. We faced him once last year and he gave us 4 runs in 5 IP, but had a no decision. Will yet another crappy pitcher shut is down?

Weather: 72 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 10 MPH wind blowing right to left
Attendance: 17,684

Top of the First:
Jose Julio tries to bunt his way aboard, but fails, 1-3. Brian Mitchell swings at the first pitch and pops out to short. Some day we will not have automatic outs at the top of our order... Fernando Mexicano lines a hit to right. Glenn Snowden flies out to left.... His home runs have been nice, but it would be nicer if he got some other hits, too... Only batting .264 now.

Bottom of the First:
Tom Babcock grounds out to short. Ken Esh strikes out. Mike Oakley grounds a hit to right. Russ Jimenez flies out to right!

Bottom of the Second:

Jim Sager grounds a hit to center and Tony Norris lines one there. But the next three make outs!

Top of the Third:
Jim Shippy leads off with a triple to center! P Duke McKenzie swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to center and Shippy tags up and scores! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Third:

Tom Babcock, that noted slugger, leads off with a home run to right... Tie Game: 1 to 1. Ken Esh takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Mike Oakley, who IS a noted slugger, hits another home run to right... 3 to 1, Astros. The Bullpen is up. Russ Jimenez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Jim Sager grounds a hit to left and Jimenez goes to 3rd. Call to the Bullpen: Garry Ayers (29-R), to make his season debut. Tony Norris takes yet another 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with no outs... Dalton Steele strikes out. Greg Wertz with yet another 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and a run is forced in... 4 to 1, Astros. If I had a nickel for every run that our relievers have forced in with walks this year.... Well, I would not be rich, but I bet I could buy a candy bar... P Ed Sliney strikes out looking. 2 outs. Tom Babcock, who started the inning with a home run, strikes out!

Top of the Fourth:

Fernando Mexicano draws a walk and Glenn Snowden grounds a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit and Mexicano goes to 3rd. Rick Woodell grounds a hit to center and Mexicano scores! 4 to 2, Astros. Shannon Kuchta grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4, and Snowden goes to 3rd. Juan Rojas lines out to left on a 3-2 pitch and Snowden tags up and scores. 4 to 3, Astros. A wild pitch sends Kuchta to scoring position. Jim Shippy lines a hit to left and Kuchta scores!!! Tie Game: 4 to 4. Shippy is hot! PH Kurt Cunning (30-R) is sent up, but does not get to bat because Shippy gets caught stealing....

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Rick Woodell triples to center! They walk Shannon Kuchta intentionally. He gets caught stealing... 2 outs. Juan Rojas strikes out...

Top of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Gerry Slate (30-R), who has not allowed a run in 15.1 IP with 17 SO. Jim Shippy leads off and hits one 420 ft. to center for a home run!!!! Unbelievable!!! He had 3 XBH in 98 AB for us last year and that was his third in 19 AB this year! Second today!

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Dick Register (28-L), beginning his 3rd inning of work. 21 pitches thrown. PH Jack Keene (24-R), making his Major League debut, swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short. Tom Babcock swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short! PH Willie Cadena (32-L), batting .267 with 0 HR in 45 AB is sent up. He hit 7 HR last year in 153 AB. He launches one to deep right, but not deep enough and Jose Julio catches it and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!
