Spring Training wrap-up (1975)

The Brewers conclude the 1975 Spring Training schedule with the Brewers winning 10-0 against the Portland Wild Things. The win gave them an exhibition season record of 22-8, easily the best record in the MGL and a bit better than the SJL's Washington Night Train, who finished at 20-10.

The last victory saw big games from Bobby Erbakan, Joe McPhillips, Andrew Kennedy, and saw Harry Lyerly finish the Spring with a 4-1 record and an ERA of 0.89.

So, in case you don't already know this about me, this sort of thing scares the bejeezus out of me. My general feeling is that a great pre-season presages a bad regular season, or at least a bad start to the regular season.

A few last minute roster moves. Joe Willemse was sent down to AAA Chester with a few days left in the exhibition schedule and the Brewers had a tough decision to make to get down to 25 by either putting left-handed reliever Jeremy Walker, who had a very good 1974 but a tough Spring, on waivers since he is out of minor league options (or trading him) or sending down the very talented Ben Flynn, who had a great Spring, is considered far more talented than Walker and gives the team another power bat off the bench, down to AAA Chester as he has options remaining.

And then Matt Helm hurt his back and was placed on the 10-day IL. He's expected to be healed before the 10 days are up, but it kept the team from having to make any decisions yet regarding Walker and Flynn. And then Hector Hard was diagnosed with biceps tendinitis and is expected to miss at least 3 weeks and also was placed on the IL. So Willemse got to return to the Brewers to start the season.
