After three: Pittsburgh 0 Chicago 0.

In the top of the fourth, Clarke hit a lead off single for the Pirates first baserunner of the game. One out later, Wagner brought Clarke home with a triple. It was Wagner's 159th career triple, placing him 18th for most career triples in major league history. The Pirates then put on the squeeze but Leach failed to make contact and Wagner was tagged out at home.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cubs loaded the bases with two out. However, Moran flew out to center to end the inning without the Cubs scoring.

In the bottom of the fifth, Chance tied the game with an RBI double. One out later, Tinker singled to bring Chance home with the go-ahead run. This time it would be the Cubs who failed on the squeeze attempt as Evers would fail to make contact and Tinker would be tagged out at home.

After six: Chicago 2 Pittsburgh 1.

In the top of the eighth, Wilson was thrown out at home trying to score the tying run from second on a Miller two-out single.

In the top of the ninth, with the tying run at third and two out, pinch hitter Vin Campbell grounded to second to end the game.

The Pirates got 10 hits in the loss.

Final score: Chicago 2 Pittsburgh 1.
