American League SS Rico Petrocelli was named the MVP of the 1970 MLB All Star Game. Petrocelli was 2 for 5 with a HR and RBI in a 3-2 win over the National League. The 27 year old is hitting .333 with 28 HRs and 68 RBIs in 89 games. Petrocelli had a career high for HRs in 1969 when he hit .292 with 39 HRs and a league leading 139 RBIs in 161 games for the Red Sox. (In real life, Pete Rose crashes into C Ray Fosse to score the winning run for the NL)

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Bill Singer allowed 2 hits and struck out 8 in a complete game 3-0 win over the Mets. The 26 year old is now 7-2 with a 1.50 ERA in 10 starts. Singer had a career high with 319 IPs in 1969 when he went 22-7 with a league leading 1.61 ERA in 40 starts for the Dodgers.

Boston Red Sox CF Reggie Smith was 2 for 2 with a HR and 3 RBIs in a 8-3 win over the Brewers. The 25 year old is hitting .314 with 27 HRs and 76 RBIs in 85 games. Smith had a previous career high in HRs in 1969 when he hit .337 with a league leading 36 doubles, 23 HRs and 109 RBIs in 161 games for the Red Sox.

San Diego Padres SS Steve Huntz was 3 for 5 with 2 HRs and 4 RBIs in a 12-5 win over the Phillies. The 24 year old is hitting .235 with 13 HRs and 32 RBIs in 86 games. Huntz had a previous high with HRs in 1969 when he hit .245 with 3 HRs and 23 RBIs in 88 games for the Cardinals.

Los Angeles Dodgers CF Willie Davis was 5 for 9 with 3 HRs and 4 RBIs in a double header split with the Phillies. The 30 year old is hitting .316 with 5 HRs and 44 RBIs in 87 games. Davis had a career high in HRs in 1962 when he hit .285 with a league leading 10 Triples, 21 HRs and 85 RBIs in 157 games for the Dodgers. Davis was named the NL Player of the Week hitting 10 for 20 with 3 HRs and 4 RBIs in 5 games.

Kansas City Royals CF Amos Otis was named the AL Player of the Week. The 23 year old is hitting .307 with 14 HRs and 54 RBIs in 90 games. Otis had a previous high of 1 HR last year when he also hit .197 with 12 RBIs in 75 games for the Mets.

This Weeks Major Transactions.

The Boston Red Sox will be without the services of 3B George Scott for up to 4 weeks. The 26 year old is hitting .281 with 20 HRs and 67 RBIs in 86 games. Scott had a career high for HRs in his rookie season when he hit .245 with 27 HRs and 90 RBIs in 162 games for the Red Sox in 1966. Scott is a 2-time Gold Glover and a 1966 AL All Star. Scott led the AL with 152 strikeouts in 1966, a rookie record. Scott placed second in rookie of the year that year behind Tommie Agee. Scott hit a woeful .171 in 1969 with 3 HRs, many say due to player unrest with manager Dick Williams. Eventually Williams was fired on September 23rd 1969.

The San Francisco Giants have released 3B Jim Davenport. It looks like this is the end of the line for the 36 year old who is hitting .243 with 0 HRs and 4 RBIs in 22 games this year. Davenport had a career high 14 HRs in 1962 when he hit .297 with 58 RBIs in 144 games for the Giants. Davenport also won a Gold Glove and a All Star position in 1962. Davenport led the league with 17 Sac Hits in 1958. Best known for his fielding, Davenport played 97 consecutive errorless games at 3B between 1966 and 1968.

The Detroit Tigers have sold the contract of SP Earl Wilson to the San Diego Padres. The 35 year old is 7-7 with a 4.28 ERA in 19 starts for the Tigers. Wilson had a career high of 264 IPs in both the 1966 and 1967 seasons. For the 1967 season, he led the league in wins when he went 22-11 with a 3.27 ERA in 38 starts for the Tigers. In 1963 Wilson led the league with 105 walks and 21 wild pitches. Wilson debuted on July 28th, 1959 as the Red Sox first ever black pitcher. Wilson had a no hitter in 1962 when he beat the Angels 2-0 and hit a HR in the game. That no hitter was the first ever by a black pitcher in the AL. Wilson has hit 34 HRs in his career including 7 in 1966 and again in 1968.

The San Francisco Giants have traded SP Mike McCormick to the New York Yankees in exchange for John Cumberland. The 31 year old McCormick is 1-5 with 2 saves, a 4.94 ERA in 19 games including 11 starts for the Giants. McCormick had a career high with 262 IPs in 1967 and led the league in wins when he was 22-10 with a 2.85 ERA in 35 starts for the Giants. McCormick won the 1967 NL Cy Young Award and was a 2-time All Star. McCormick also led the league with a 2.70 ERA in 1960. McCormick was the first Giants pitcher in franchise history to win a Cy Young. (Tim Lincecum was next in 2008). "Mr 500", he was credited with the MLB's 500th HR by an MLB pitcher and he gave up Hank Aaron's 500th career HR.
