From The Australian Star Sydney, NSW July 1899....Boxing before a large boisterous mob at the Old Tin Shed Tommy Burns and Bill Squires put on a slashing good biffo after a feeling out round....Squires surprised Burns with his newly acquired defence in round two and won it with several hard pokes to the face and a heavy hook to the ribs....The champion won rounds three and four with combinations to the body and short right hands to the head...the end came suddenly, 42 seconds into round five when Burns ducked under a looping right and came up with a left and right on the jaw...Billy McColl just didn't seem to have the will to fend off young Des Quinlan a second time in their third battle for the Australasian championship.....Referee Arthur Scott scored 8 of the 12 rounds for Quinlan and few could argue with the decision as he clearly won the last five in a row....In a preliminary Owen Sullivan needed only four rounds to dispose of visiting American Frank Craig who has clearly left his best years behind him....At Cape Town, South Afrika, Japie Smit (9-1-4) of Modderfontein loses on a foul in the third round of his first main event, disqualified by referee Abe Bailey for a low blow to veteran Fred McMullen...On the undercard Ron Anderson improves his record to 10-0-1 with a six round nod over Henry Bekker....In the co-feature Cape Town's Dave Bell knocks out JR Couper 35 seconds into round one....
